Jurgen Klopp has demanded a rematch of Liverpool's game against Tottenham following the controversial decision by VAR to disallow Luis Diaz's goal due to an offside ruling.
In anticipation of Liverpool's upcoming Europa League encounter with Union Saint-Gilloise, Klopp emphasized the significance of approaching the matter with utmost sincerity and accountability, considering the immense prominence and significance of football.
All those involved, including the on-field referee, linesman, fourth official, and particularly in this situation, VAR, did not intentionally commit the error. It was a clear mistake, and I believe there could have been remedies for it afterward.
While some may not appreciate my opinion, I don't say this as the manager of Liverpool primarily, but rather as a football enthusiast. The only fair resolution would be a rematch. That's just how it is, although it is unlikely to occur.
Diaz was initially called offside after scoring, but replays indicated that he was actually onside. Unfortunately, the VAR, Darren England, mistakenly thought that the on-field decision was to award the goal. As a result, England informed Simon Hooper, the referee, that the check was done.
When the replay operator alerted England and the assistant VAR, Dan Cook, about their error after the goal was not given, they repeatedly stated their inability to intervene since the game had already resumed.
Klopp stated that the objection against having a replay would likely be that it would open the floodgates for everyone to request one. He emphasized that the situation is unprecedented, even for someone like himself who has experienced many incorrect and challenging decisions throughout his 56 years. Therefore, Klopp believes that a replay would be the appropriate action to take. Alternatively, he suggested that the referee could rectify the mistake by convening both coaches and proposing to let Liverpool score a goal, allowing the game to restart from that point.
I hold no anger towards anyone whatsoever. Let us refrain from pursuing any retribution against them. They committed an error and undoubtedly experienced immense remorse that evening. I have absolute certainty in this regard. It is sufficient for me, as no additional penalties are necessary for anyone.
