Kim Kardashian rarely mentions O.J. Simpson, unless it involves jury duty. In a preview of the upcoming episode of The Kardashians, Kim, who is 43 years old, humorously ponders ways to avoid fulfilling her civic duty.
She tells the cameras that it is her birthday week and she has been called to jury duty. She jokes that she feels like there's some kind of O.J. connection that will get her out of jury duty. Kim quickly clarifies that she wasn't serious and adds, "I'm just kidding."
Kim has rarely discussed her connection to O.J. Simpson despite a surprising comment she made. O.J. Simpson gained notoriety in 1994 when he was arrested and charged with the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Kim's father, the late Robert Kardashian, was a member of O.J.'s legal team.
Robert Kardashian, who was previously married to Kris Jenner from 1978 to 1991, had four children with her: Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, and Rob Kardashian. Following their divorce, Kris, now 63, began a relationship with Caitlyn Jenner, which lasted until 2013. (Robert passed away in 2003 at the age of 59 after battling esophageal cancer.)
The infamous O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995, but was found responsible for Ron and Nicole’s deaths in a civil trial three years later. The Kardashians have rarely spoken about how their parents being on opposite sides of the trial impacted them.
Khloé, 39, shared with E! True Hollywood Story in 2009, "O.J. was always our Uncle O.J., Nicole was my Auntie Nicole. You're unsure of what to believe or how to interpret it. It's heartbreaking to witness your parents endure so much pain for simply being loyal friends."
Kim explained that she supported her father because she had a strong trust in him. In an interview with Rolling Stone in July 2015, she mentioned, "I definitely took my dad's side. We always believed that my dad was the smartest person in the world, and he had a strong belief in his friend."
During that time, Kim mentioned that the situation caused a division within her family.
Kim shared with David Letterman in October 2020 that her mom strongly believed her friend was murdered by him, which was very traumatic for her. When they visited her dad's house, the situation was completely different.
As she grew older, Kim chose not to speak about the case out of respect for O.J. and Nicole's children, Sydney and Justin. She emphasized the importance of not saying anything that could hurt someone's feelings publicly, unless she needed to defend herself or a family member.
Kim made a lighthearted comment about her past with O.J. Simpson while hosting Saturday Night Live in 2021. She joked about meeting her first Black person because of her father, saying it's strange to remember the first Black person she met, but O.J. certainly left an impression, whether good or bad.
Earlier this year, O.J. passed away at the age of 76 after a private battle with cancer. A statement shared in April revealed that O.J., also known as Orenthal James Simpson, peacefully passed away while surrounded by his children and grandchildren. The family requested privacy and understanding during this difficult time.
The news of O.J.'s passing came two months after reports of his battle with prostate cancer. Although O.J. never confirmed his diagnosis publicly. According to a source, the Kardashians chose to keep their distance from O.J.
An insider shared in April that it appeared the Kardashians were afraid of Simpson and stayed vigilant for their own safety. Many still viewed O.J. as a potential, unpredictable danger to themselves and their loved ones.
None of the Kardashians spoke out after O.J.’s death.
Hulu releases new episodes of The Kardashians every Thursday.
