Katharine McPhee and David Foster kicked off the holiday season with a lively performance at the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Taking the stage at the 97th annual event on November 23, the 39-year-old McPhee and 74-year-old Foster delighted the crowd with a rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” The couple graced the Hallmark Channel’s Heartwarming Holiday Countdown float, which showcased a festive 3-D Christmas calendar and offered delightful surprises behind each date, inspired by the network’s Countdown to Christmas tradition.

Other artists featured in the parade's lineup were Cher, Jon Batiste, Brandy, Jessie James Decker, and Ashley Park.

Foster and McPhee, married in June 2019 and parents to son Rennie since February 2021, released their holiday album, Christmas Songs, in 2022, with a full version including extra songs released in October.

In a lighthearted manner, McPhee previously quipped that she managed to "guilt" Foster into collaborating on a recording. "I remember saying, 'It's absolutely crazy that I'm married to the most incredible producer of our time, and you've only recorded a few songs for me,'" she shared with People in October 2022. "And then he responded, 'Well, why don't we just do a Christmas album?'"

What began as an enjoyable side project for the duo quickly evolved into a full-fledged release. "We initially intended to just release a few songs on Spotify, but ended up creating a seven-song EP. Our co-manager began circulating it to various labels," McPhee recounted. "Before we knew it, we had an entire Christmas lineup of performances and promotional activities."

Foster found the recording process to be effortless, praising her amazing singing abilities. "I had the freedom to create the tracks and do things my way before bringing her in to add her vocals," he explained. "It was a lot of fun. There were a few songs we were unsure if she could handle, but she performed like a professional."

Many stars have attempted to create original Christmas songs in the past, but Foster stressed the importance of honoring the classics. "From my experience with Christmas albums, it's clear that people are not really interested in hearing new Christmas songs, aside from Mariah [Carey]," he stated. Foster and McPhee both shared a fondness for traditional holiday tunes. "I wrote a Christmas song called 'Grown-Up Christmas List' for this album. It's not a classic, but it has been covered by numerous artists," he remarked. "We truly appreciate the classics, such as 'Frosty the Snowman' and 'Winter Wonderland,' because of their clever composition."
