Kansas City Chiefs kicker stands by contentious commencement address

Following his speech at a recent college commencement that sparked controversy, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stands by his words, highlighting the importance of his Catholic beliefs in his defense.

In his first public remarks since his controversial speech at a college graduation, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stood by his address and highlighted his Catholic beliefs.

During a speech at the “Courage Under Fire” gala in Nashville, Butker expressed, “It’s evident now that the enduring Catholic principles are not well-received by everyone.”

Travis Kelce responds to Harrison Butker’s commencement speech

This is the first time the three-time Super Bowl champion has spoken publicly about his commencement address at Benedictine College, a small Catholic college in Kansas, on May 11. Butker's comments during the address were seen by many as homophobic and sexist. He referred to Pride Month as a "deadly sin" and emphasized the value of a woman's accomplishments in the home over academic or professional goals, among other controversial statements.

Friday night's gala was organized by Regina Caeli Academy, a hybrid campus/homeschool Catholic school group with multiple locations nationwide. The event featured various speakers, including right-wing media personality Matt Walsh from the Daily Wire.

"Butker, who serves on the school's board of directors, mentioned that discussions about his beliefs or public perceptions of his beliefs have been widespread in recent days."

Regina Caeli Academy has not yet provided a response to CNN's request for comment.

Butker shared that initially, there was a lot of hate directed towards him. However, as time passed, even those who didn't agree with his beliefs showed support for his right to practice his religion.

He emphasized his dedication to his Catholic faith, stating, "Our love for Jesus and our need to speak up should always be stronger than our desire for acceptance from the world."

Butker, in his speech, mentioned Saint Daniel, a biblical prophet who defied a law that sentenced worshipers to death by continuing to pray to God. Daniel was thrown into a lion's den for his unwavering commitment to prayer.

Butker expressed admiration for the courage shown by many saints in their lives. Daniel, as per the Old Testament, was spared by God because of his strong faith.

The Chiefs kicker reflected on his courage in light of potential consequences, comparing it to the story of Daniel being fed to lions. He acknowledged that his actions may result in some suffering and people not liking him, but he believed it could be God's will.

The NFL responded to Butker's comments by issuing a statement earlier this month, clarifying that his views do not represent those of the league.

Butker's speech on May 11 received criticism from LGBT advocacy group GLAAD. They described his comments as "a clear miss" and "woefully out of step with Americans on Pride, LGBTQ people, and women."

The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica monastery, who are the founding institution and sponsor of Benedictine College, also distanced themselves from Butker's message. In a statement, they stated, "The sisters of Mount St. Scholastica do not believe that Harrison Butker's comments in his 2024 Benedictine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested. Instead of promoting unity in our church, our nation, and the world, his comments seem to have fostered division."

Travis Kelce, a fellow Chiefs star, shared his thoughts on the commencement address recently. He mentioned that he may not agree with "just about any" of Butker's views, but he still values him as a teammate.

During the latest episode of the "New Heights" podcast that he co-hosts with his brother, Jason, Kelce expressed his appreciation for Butker. He highlighted that although they may not see eye to eye on everything, he cherishes Butker as a teammate. Kelce also referenced a comment made by Pat Mahomes, emphasizing that Butker is not only a great person but also a great teammate.

Editor's P/S:

Harrison Butker's speech has sparked controversy and divided opinions. His unwavering adherence to his Catholic beliefs, even in the face of criticism, highlights the complex relationship between religion and society. While his right to express his views is protected, it is important to recognize the potential harm that such comments can have on marginalized communities, particularly the LGBTQ+ community. It is crucial to foster an inclusive environment where all individuals are respected and valued.

Butker's reference to Saint Daniel's courage in the face of adversity is a testament to the power of faith. However, it is essential to distinguish between personal beliefs and public discourse. While individuals are entitled to hold their own convictions, it is equally important to ensure that these beliefs do not infringe upon the rights and dignity of others. Open dialogue and respectful discussions can help bridge differences and promote understanding.
