Three weeks after revealing her fifth studio album, Deeper Well, Kacey Musgraves released a new single titled “Too Good to Be True.”

Musgraves, aged 35, shared a message on Instagram on Wednesday, February 28, quoting the chorus of the new track. She expressed her vulnerability, saying, “Please don’t make me regret opening up that part of myself that I’ve been scared to give again. Be good to me and I’ll be good to you. But please don’t be too good to be true.”

Hours before the release of her new single "Too Good to Be True" and its lyric video, Kacey Musgraves shared an acoustic cover of the album's first single, "Deeper Well," on Instagram. The Grammy-winning singer expressed her excitement for the upcoming release in the self-recorded video.

"Too Good to Be True" carries the same folk and melodic elements as "Deeper Well." In this latest single, Musgraves reflects on the blissful early stage of a relationship, likening it to a dream. She admits to being fully invested in the relationship and expresses her hope that it isn't just a fleeting fantasy, as the title suggests.

Musgraves revealed details about her upcoming album, Deeper Well, on February 8, including the release date of March 15. The album draws inspiration from the vibrant energy of New York City's Greenwich Village, as stated in the press release.

In a statement, Musgraves expressed her quest for a new environmental energy, citing Electric Lady Studios in NYC as having the perfect vibe. She mentioned being drawn to different directions and eventually finding new inspiration, insight, and deeper love after encountering challenges and changes in direction.

Musgraves sings about the NYC energy in “Too Good to Be True,” referencing it in the second verse where she sings, “In my mind, we’re in New York / You had never been before / But, baby, now it’s our town.”

In “Deeper Well,” Musgraves alludes to significant changes in her life at age 27, leading fans to speculate that the song may be about her ex-husband, Ruston Kelly, whom she met at that age.

Musgraves tied the knot with Kelly in 2017, just a year after they first met. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in divorce in 2020. Shortly after, Musgraves began a relationship with Cole Schafer. However, in November 2023, it was confirmed that Musgraves and Schafer had decided to part ways.

According to an insider, the couple's personalities ultimately didn't mesh well, and Schafer was not fond of the "glitz and glamour" associated with Musgraves' lifestyle.

A second insider revealed that Kacey Musgraves and Cole weren't in sync with their current life paths, leading them to mutually agree to break up.

Despite Musgraves' tendency to draw inspiration from her personal relationships for her music, her upcoming album Deeper Well will explore a variety of themes beyond her previous marriage and divorce chronicled in Star-Crossed.

"According to the album's press release, Kacey Musgraves' lyrics are praised for their keen observations of the world and discerning eye for the subtle nuances of life. Her songs focus on moments that often go unnoticed, transforming them into timeless pieces that resonate deeply with listeners. Themes such as Saturn returns, cardinals symbolizing a lost friend, the ebb and flow of love, bustling city streets, the bittersweet act of leaving the past behind, new beginnings, the power of talismans like jade bracelets, the wisdom gained from life's trials, the significance of small details, finding solace in nature, and the allure of New York City as a modern-day Oz are all captured in her music."
