Exploring the Incompatibility: Kacey Musgraves and Ex-Boyfriend Cole Schafer's 'Mismatched Personalities' (Exclusive)

Kacey Musgraves and Cole Schafer's relationship hit a snag as their personalities clashed, leading to their breakup, according to an exclusive source Find out more about the reasons behind their split

The reason for Kacey Musgraves and Cole Schafer's breakup wasn't due to a single factor, as a source exclusively reveals in the latest issue of We. According to the insider, 29-year-old Schafer wasn't fond of the spotlight and all the high-profile aspects of dating 35-year-old Musgraves, and their personalities ultimately didn't mesh well.

According to the source, Schafer was not fond of "always being Kacey's date to events" and is "a very sensitive, deep-thinking man who doesn't have the same goals as her."

Another insider suggests that the idea of marriage is what caused the couple to grow apart. "Kacey and Cole were not in agreement about their current life goals, so they chose to break things off," the second source tells Us.

In November, it was confirmed that Musgraves and Schafer ended their relationship after two years of dating. Their relationship began nearly one year after Musgraves filed for divorce from her ex-husband Ruston Kelly. In an interview with Elle in June/July 2021, Musgraves admitted to feeling like she was "crumbling" during her three-year marriage to Kelly and expressed regret for not addressing her feelings sooner.

She pondered some significant inquiries - "What was the reasoning behind my choices? How did I end up in this situation? What steps can I take to avoid repeating this pattern? Why do I continuously gravitate towards similar individuals?" - while in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, which altered her outlook.

"In my career, I felt like I was on top of the world, but in my personal life, I felt like I was slowly dying," she shared. "I was falling apart, feeling a deep sense of sadness and loneliness. I felt completely broken."

Musgraves admitted to feeling like a failure following her divorce. "There's nothing more humiliating than remaining in a place where you no longer belong," she expressed.

Even after her marriage ended, Musgraves remained determined to find love. "He didn't know who I was, and I loved that," she told The New York Times about Schafer in August 2021. "A few mature men would come out and try to keep up with you on the sidewalk, and it felt very predatory."

In a January 2022 Instagram post celebrating Schafer's birthday, she described him as "the brightest light in my world," and he reciprocated the sentiment after her Madison Square Garden concert in February 2022.

"She possesses an exceptional natural talent, unlike anyone I've encountered before. I've heard of artists feeling ill and struggling before going on stage, but Kace effortlessly glides around backstage like a indecisive butterfly. What truly impresses me about her is that she remains the same genuine person whether she’s talking to family, friends, or performing in front of thousands."
