Kacey Musgraves’ family members, especially her grandma, are not afraid to share their opinions about her career. During her appearance on Today’s Country Radio on Wednesday, March 20, Musgraves, 35, shared a funny story about her grandma's reaction to a photo shoot. She mentioned how her grandma gasped in shock when she saw a particular naked photo taken by her sister, reacting as if she had witnessed a car wreck.
Musgraves shared that her grandmother, Barbara, was shocked when she saw the alternative nude cover of her latest album, Deeper Well, that came out recently.
"She couldn't believe it! She was like, 'Is that really the cover?' And I said, 'Yes, it's one of the covers,'" Musgraves added.
Barbara had some strong words for her granddaughter when she realized that Musgraves was serious.
Musgraves remembered the conversation, "She said, 'Kacey, you're a singer, not a stripper.' And I replied, 'Well, you know what? You can be both.'"
In the image Musgraves mentioned, she is depicted lying naked on the ground in a meadow surrounded by grass and small yellow wildflowers, with trees in the background. Her back is turned towards the camera and her flowing brown hair is the only covering for her body.

Musgraves noted that the picture wasn’t really planned. Instated, it came about organically while she was on location with her sister.
On a radio program, she shared her spontaneous idea of imagining herself as tiny in a vast green space, curled up like in a fetal position, feeling vulnerable and almost like experiencing a rebirth.
The second cover option, photographed by Musgraves' sister, shows a different side of the artist. She is seen wearing an off-the-shoulder sweater, looking directly at the camera, holding a crimson clover as the wind gently tousles her hair.
Musgraves' grandma has previously expressed her opinions on her artistic choices. In a 2018 interview with Stereogum, she revealed that her grandma used to scold her for swearing.
Musgraves shared, "[My grandma] still has a big problem with my language. I swear a lot and she just can't seem to get used to it. Every time I say something, she reacts with a shudder and says, 'Kacey.'"
In her song "Slow Burn" from her album Golden Hour released in 2018, Musgraves mentions her grandma's reactions. The lyrics go, "Texas is hot / I can be cold / Grandma cried when I pierced my nose."
