John Boyega Reveals the Most Controversial Film in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy

John Boyega reveals his least favorite Star Wars sequel trilogy film from the Disney era while expressing his overall appreciation for all the movies

John Boyega, known for his significant contribution in the latest Star Wars trilogy, holds his own opinions about the films despite acknowledging their overall quality. Though he refrains from labeling it as 'bad,' Boyega holds the viewpoint that The Last Jedi stands as the weakest installment within the trilogy. When asked about his personal ranking of the three films, Boyega considers them all to be good but places Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the top, followed by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and ultimately, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

During an episode of "Truth or Dab: Rapid Fire" on First We Feast's Twitter account, Boyega expressed his opinions on the Star Wars sequel trilogy while ranking the films. According to him, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" holds the top spot. He ranked "Star Wars 9 (The Rise of Skywalker)" as second best and, with utmost respect, considered "Episode 8 (The Last Jedi)" the least favorite. However, he reiterated that he finds all the movies enjoyable. Boyega refrained from expanding on his thoughts about the trilogy beyond his rankings.

In "The Last Jedi," Boyega's character Finn primarily shares screen time with Rose Tico, a newly introduced and widely discussed character, as the two collaborate to take down The First Order. This marks a notable departure from Finn's role in the previous two movies, where he spent more time with the main characters of the new trilogy, such as Rey and Poe, as well as the classic characters from the original trilogy, like Han Solo and CPO. It is possible that Boyega preferred having a more significant involvement in the central storyline of those movies rather than being part of a secondary storyline, regardless of the overall outcome of the films.

Released in 2017, The Last Jedi faced immense controversy among its fans. In fact, there may not be a film in cinema history that has divided its fanbase as much as The Last Jedi. Supporters of the film praised its daring risks and exploration of new territories within the Star Wars universe. On the other hand, detractors argued that the changes made to original characters like Luke Skywalker, along with the unexpected plot twists, only served to worsen the film. Perhaps if Lucasfilm had maintained one director for all three movies, the level of division might not have been as strong. However, hindsight always provides clearer vision.

One regrettable aspect of Boyega's character, Finn, is that he began with so much potential in The Force Awakens, only to be underutilized in the subsequent films. Finn started as a stormtrooper who experienced a change of heart after witnessing the harsh realities of war, eventually defecting to join The Resistance. Unfortunately, his motivations and character development were not thoroughly explored or expanded upon throughout the trilogy. This was even more frustrating considering the depth given to characters like Rey and Kylo Ren during the same period. Despite this missed opportunity to showcase Boyega's acting talent, he still holds the new Star Wars trilogy in high regard.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi can be streamed on Disney Plus.
