Jessica Simpson Embraces Iconic 'Newlyweds' Moment in Hilarious Chicken of the Sea Ad

Jessica Simpson is joining in on the fun. Over 20 years since her memorable mix-up with Chicken of the Sea-brand tuna on the premiere of Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica in 2003, Simpson, 43, is collaborating with the seafood company.
In a new commercial for Chicken of the Sea, Simpson’s 11-year-old daughter Maxwell sees her enjoying some tuna.
“Mom, what are you eating in that packet?” Maxwell asks.
“It’s called Chicken of the Sea. But it’s not really chicken, it’s tuna. So, don’t get confused by it,” Simpson replies.

Maxwell then questions, “Who would ever get confused by that?” prompting Simpson to deny her past ignorance.
"Absolutely no one, not even your own mother," Simpson insists unconvincingly before staring into space with a horrified expression, undoubtedly recalling her infamous reality TV moment.
This collaboration comes over twenty years after Simpson sought clarification from her then-husband Nick Lachey about canned food during an episode of their MTV show.
"Is this chicken or fish? It's labeled tuna, but it says 'chicken by the sea'. Is that silly?" Simpson, 50, asked Lachey. "Why call it 'chicken by the sea'?"
Lachey shook his head in disbelief. "It's like you've never had tuna before," he replied. "Chicken of the Sea is just the brand name. It's a play on words because many people eat both tuna and chicken, so it's like the 'chicken of the sea'."
Simpson replied: “Oh, I understand now. I read it wrong.”
Newlyweds ran for 3 seasons, coming to an end in 2005. Simpson and Lachey divorced one year after the reality show’s conclusion.
Following the resurgence of series clips on TikTok, with one scene showing Lachey referring to Simpson as a "spoiled brat," some fans started to question Lachey's role as the antagonist in their marriage. In a July 2023 interview with Bustle, Simpson brushed off social media comments claiming Lachey was "mean to her" and a "terrible husband." She dismissed these perceptions, stating, "It's incredible how public opinion can change."

Simpson has moved on with her husband Eric Johnson and they have three children together: daughter Maxwell, son Ace, and daughter Birdie, who is 4 years old. Meanwhile, Nick shares three children with his wife Vanessa Lachey: sons Camden and Phoenix, and daughter Brooklyn. While Simpson may have been portrayed as a "dumb blonde" on Newlyweds, she had the final say on the chicken-tuna mix-up.
