Grimes has filed a lawsuit against her former partner, Elon Musk, regarding the parental rights of their three children. The 35-year-old artist, whose real name is Claire Boucher, submitted a "petition to establish parental relationship" on September 29 in the Superior Court of Francisco, based on court records acquired by We.
The documents are confidential, but in California, a petition can be filed to establish the parental relationship and have a judge determine the legal parents of a child. This legal action is commonly used by unmarried parents. Us has contacted Grimes and Musk, aged 52, for their response. Grimes and Musk have three children together: a son named X AE-A-Xii, aged 3; a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl, aged 21 months; and a son called Techno Mechanicus, who is affectionately nicknamed "Tau" and was confirmed by Grimes to have been born last month.
The singer of "Oblivion" turned to X, previously known as Twitter and owned by Musk, on September 10 to address a family issue. In doing so, she subtly confirmed Techno's birth.
"Hey, I would rather not contribute any further to the current media attention, but I want to de-escalate," she started, referring to a post that has been deleted where Grimes accused Musk of preventing her from seeing one of their sons. She also criticized Shivon Zilis, with whom Musk welcomed twins Strider and Azure in November 2021.
Grimes continued, expressing her relief of having had a long overdue conversation with Shivon. She emphasized that any delays were not Shivon's fault and requested that no anger be directed towards her. Grimes conveyed a mutual respect between them, expressing excitement about the prospect of becoming friends and having their children grow up together.
In the final part of the post, the musician mentioned her youngest child, stating her desire to share Techno's cuteness but prioritizing the protection of her children's privacy for now.
Grimes made a social media statement a few days after commenting on photos of Azure and Strider that were shared by Walter Isaacson, the author of Elon Musk's biography. Grimes wrote a now-deleted response to Isaacson's tweet, saying, "Please ask Shivon to unblock me and tell Elon to let me see my son, or please respond to my lawyer." She expressed that she had never been allowed to see any pictures of the children until now, which has caused a significant rift in her family.
Grimes and Musk embarked on their relationship in 2018 and have maintained a unique connection ever since. In an interview with Vanity Fair in March 2022, Grimes expressed the difficulty in defining her relationship with the tech mogul, stating that there is no specific label that accurately captures their dynamic. She referred to him as her boyfriend but emphasized their fluidity, highlighting the fact that they reside in separate residences while remaining extremely close as best friends. Despite the intricacies of their bond, Grimes acknowledged the challenge of others comprehending their unconventional arrangement.
Grimes tweeted after the interview that she and Musk had once again ended their relationship since the article was written.
Alongside the three children Musk has with Grimes and the two he has with Zilis, the CEO of SpaceX also has twins named Vivian Jenna and Griffin, aged 19, triplets named Kai, Saxon, and Damian, aged 17, and a son named Nevada, who passed away at 10 weeks old due to sudden infant death syndrome in 2002, from his previous marriage to Justine Wilson.
