Actor Nicolas Cage has had a prolific career, appearing in over 100 movies. However, a Superman movie directed by Tim Burton never materialized. Cage recently spoke at the Red Sea Film Festival, revealing that the studio preferred a different director, Renny Harlin, for the project. Ultimately, the studio became concerned about the budget and the Superman movie was cancelled.
"I knew if you're gonna play that part, you have to hit the bull's eye. We got really close, but the studio called and shut the whole thing down," he said, as reported by Deadline. "I think they were afraid about how much it would cost and [if] they would get their money back."
Images of Cage in a Superman suit from his screen test later appeared online, giving fans a glimpse at what could have been. Cage never got his own Superman movie, but he did appear as Superman in The Flash in a cameo role.
Cage recently mentioned that his career as a film actor may be winding down, with only 3-4 movies left in him. He is considering shifting his focus to a television project in the future.
Although Cage won an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas in 1995, he was never paid for his role. His next project is the A24 film Dream Scenario, where he portrays an ordinary man who inexplicably begins appearing in the dreams of others.
Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I grew up watching Nicolas Cage movies and have always been a fan of his unique acting style. I was excited to hear about his involvement in the unmade Superman movie and was disappointed to learn that it never came to fruition. I think it would have been an interesting take on the character and would have been a great addition to the Superman franchise. It's a shame that budget concerns prevented the movie from being made, as I believe it could have been a successful and memorable film.
I understand the studio's concerns about the budget, but I think they underestimated the potential of the movie. Nicolas Cage is a talented actor who could have brought something new to the role of Superman. Additionally, Tim Burton is a visionary director who could have created a unique and visually stunning film. I believe that the movie could have been a critical and commercial success, and it's a shame that we'll never get to see it.
