Israeli actor Idan Amedi, widely recognized for his portrayal of a special forces soldier in the popular Netflix series "Fauda," is currently in critical condition after being seriously injured while serving in the Israeli military against Hamas in Gaza. His family and the hospital treating him have confirmed the severity of his injuries, with Idan, 35, being hospitalized in the ICU at Sheba Tel Hashomer Medical Center near Tel Aviv.
The father of the star reassured the Israeli website Walla! that "There is no threat to his life."
Amedi, of Kurdish heritage, gained popularity in the 2010s as a musician before becoming part of the "Fauda" cast in 2017. He portrays a member of an Israeli special forces unit in the series, which revolves around an Israeli agent who returns from retirement to track down a Palestinian fighter he believed he had eliminated, as stated on the show's official Netflix page.
Amedi volunteered to fight for the Israeli military in Gaza after the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel, as reported by "Fauda" co-creators Lior Raz and Avi Issacharaoff. "He is a true hero and from the very beginning of the war, he chose to set aside everything and join the fight. First in the north and then in the south [of Gaza]," they told Walla! news.
Prominent Israelis, such as minister without portfolio Chili Tropper and folk-rock singer Shlomo Artzi, expressed their concern for Amedi and wished him a quick recovery, as reported by Walla! Amedi had spoken to an Israeli television channel about combat in Gaza shortly before he was injured.
"They've really outdone themselves, Hamas," he expressed to Channel 12. "The operation here is situated on a significant Hamas tunnel route. We've discovered kilometers of tunnels, weapons, and even specialized weaponry. We've been hard at work over the last two days trying to eliminate it."
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claims that Hamas has constructed an elaborate network of tunnels that extends throughout the entire strip, serving as an underground transportation system for people and goods, as well as a storage facility for rockets and ammunition, and housing for Hamas control centers.
In 2021, Hamas claimed to have constructed 500 kilometers of tunnels under Gaza, but the accuracy of this figure is uncertain. The Israeli military, during its continued offensive in the area, asserts that it has demolished numerous tunnel shafts and uncovered additional ones. This includes finding tunnels at the Al-Shifa Hospital, which was surrounded by the IDF in November, leading to significant international criticism due to the "catastrophic" conditions described by doctors inside.
Since late October, the IDF reports that at least 185 Israeli soldiers have lost their lives and over 1,000 have been wounded in Gaza combat. Meanwhile, the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in Gaza stated on Tuesday that over 23,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 59,000 have been injured since October 7th.
