The real players in Squid Game: The Challenge are not killed off like the characters in the show, so how do contestants get eliminated? Described as the most gripping television since The Traitors, the show features 456 players competing for a prize of $4.56 million across ten episodes.
The Netflix competition series recreates the iconic games of Squid Game with epic set pieces and additional tests and challenges to keep players on their toes. Contestants are not killed if they fail a game, so how are players eliminated in Squid Game: The Challenge?
How are players eliminated in Squid Game: The Challenge?
In Squid Game: The Challenge, eliminated contestants may appear to be shot by paintballs in the games ‘Red Light, Green Light’ and ‘Dalgona’, but they are actually wearing ink pads under their shirts that activate and explode – simulating being shot.
In Squid Game, players face the brutal consequence of being shot with real bullets if they fail to pass a game. In contrast, The Challenge offers a lighter alternative. For 'Red Light, Green Light', the motion tracking system triggers the bursting of an ink packet, also known as a squib, upon detecting any movement.

According to Netflix, players are eliminated from the game when the motion sensors, cameras, and game arbiters determine it, and the squib bursts to indicate the end of their time in the game. The squib is also used in Episode 2 during the game Dalgona, where players trigger the squib by breaking the interior shape of their dalgona candy, forcing them to lie on the ground until the game is complete.
Eliminated contestants in other tests and games are just escorted out of the building, lacking the same dramatic effect.
Squid Game: The Challenge Batch 1 (Episodes 1-5) is currently available on Netflix, with Batch 2 (Episodes 6-9) set to be released on November 29. More information about the show can be found below.
