Heartstopper's second season has been over for a while now, but fans are already wondering about Season 3. Here's the latest on production updates, casting, and everything we know so far.
Based on Alice Oseman's webcomics, Heartstopper is geared towards teenage audiences but has gained a devoted adult fanbase. Its nostalgic take on coming-of-age and young love, honest portrayal of LGBTQ+ relationships and issues, and compelling storytelling and characters have all contributed to its broad appeal.
Despite not having as high viewership as other popular shows on the streaming platform, Heartstopper has built a dedicated fan base and received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Season 1 and 2 have both earned impressive audience scores of 96% and 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The big question now is whether Heartstopper will be renewed for a Season 3. Here’s what we know so far, but beware of spoilers for Season 2!
Will there be a Heartstopper Season 3?
Yes! Netflix previously renewed Heartstopper for Seasons 2 and 3.
The streamer has baffled fans with recent cancellations of popular series like Warrior Nun and Lockwood & Co., but Heartstopper is an exception. In May 2022, Netflix's Tudum shared the exciting news from creator and writer Alice Oseman, confirming the two more seasons of the show due to the global reaction to the series. Keep an eye out for more!
Is there a Heartstopper Season 3 release date?
As of November 2023, there is no release date for Heartstopper Season 3.
Heartstopper Season 1 premiered in April 2022, with Season 2 following in August 2023. Based on this timeline, it's possible that Season 3 may debut in late 2024. However, it has just been announced that Season 3 of Heartstopper is now in production. Netflix's official social media accounts confirmed the news, stating, "AND ACTION!! Heartstopper Season 3 is officially in production."
We’ll be sure to keep this space updated upon any release date announcements.
Heartstopper Season 3 cast: Who will be in it?
We can expect all of our favorite cast and characters to return for Heartstopper Season 3, including:
Joe Locke as Charlie
Kit Connor as Nick
Yasmin Finney as Elle
William Gao as Tao
Corinna Brown as Tara
Kizzy Edgell as Darcy
Tobie Donovan as Isaac
Rhea Norwood as Imogen
Olivia Colman as Sarah
Jenny Walser as Tori
Leila Khan as Sahar
In November, Oseman revealed that Darragh Hand has been cast as Michael Holden, a character from her first novel Solitaire who will be making his on-screen debut in Season 3.
We won't be seeing more of one character, Ben, portrayed by Sebastian Croft. Although Ben doesn't appear beyond Volume One of the books, Oseman decided to include him in Season 2 because she felt his presence was important to the story. "As Season 2 begins to unpack the trauma that Charlie carries with him due to his toxic relationship with Ben and the bullying he has faced in the past, I felt Ben's presence was necessary to properly address those topics," she explained to Tudum.

Oseman expressed: “We had ongoing discussions about striking a balance between Ben being unrealistically demonic and too sympathetic. I believe we found that balance and I am incredibly proud and honored that Sebastian has been a part of Heartstopper. I am confident that he will achieve remarkable things, and I will be rooting for him every step of the way.”
We’ll keep this space updated when any new casting details roll in.
Heartstopper Season 3 plot: What will it be about?
With no official plot details for Season 3 yet, fans can anticipate that it will follow the events of Volume 4 of the Heartstopper graphic novel series, continuing the story from where Season 2 left off. Charlie is eager to tell Nick "I love you," and while Nick feels the same, he is dealing with the aftermath of coming out to his dad and concerns about Charlie's eating disorder, which will likely be further explored in the upcoming season.
The continuation of their friendship group’s arcs will also include Tara and Darcy’s relationship, Isaac’s journey with asexuality, Elle and Tao’s long distance relationship, and Imogen’s potential feelings for Sahar.
NetflixWill Tao and Elle go the distance?
Oseman has the freedom to deviate from the books while staying true to the source material, so Season 3 will likely include new plot details and character developments. “I’m committed to preserving what's in the comics and ensuring all the big, exciting moments are in the show, but there's so much extra space to do whatever we want,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
With Seasons 1 and 2 under our belt, the supporting cast has undergone significant development. Characters like Tao, Elle, Tara, Isaac, and even newcomers like Imogen have brought new depth to the storyline. This influx of new material has given us plenty of fresh material to work with for Season 3.
I’m confident in allowing the show to stand on its own. In my mind, the show and the comic are separate entities, despite the faithful adaptation. I'm looking forward to expanding the Heartstopper universe for the show.
