Len Goodman, the Dancing With the Stars judge, succumbed to prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones, as stated in his death certificate obtained by the U.K.'s Daily Express, several months after his demise.
On April 22, at the age of 78, the ex-DWTS judge passed away, as confirmed at that time. His agent, Jackie Gill, stated that he passed away "peacefully." The statement further expressed that he was a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, and his absence would be deeply felt by his family, friends, and acquaintances. It was mentioned that Goodman was in the company of his loved ones during his final moments.
Having started his dance career at the young age of 19, Goodman achieved immense success by winning numerous ballroom competitions throughout the years. His exceptional talent and skill were acknowledged when he received the esteemed Carl Alan Award in both 2006 and 2007, proving his expertise as a teacher and choreographer in the dance industry. In addition to his achievements, Goodman established the Goodman Dance Academy to further nurture budding talent.
After bidding farewell to his remarkable dance journey, Goodman took on a role as a judge on the highly popular British competition show, Strictly Come Dancing, from 2004 to 2016. In 2005, he embarked on a new adventure as a judge on DWTS, joining forces with his fellow judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.
After 31 seasons, he announced his DWTS retirement in 2022
Len Goodman has been a part of the show since its inception in 2005 and it has brought him immense joy. However, he has made the decision to prioritize spending more time with his grandchildren and family in Britain. In expressing his gratitude, he thanked the Dancing With the Stars family and expressed his excitement for the upcoming finale.
DWTS has paid tribute to Goodman in different ways since his passing. During the premiere of season 32 on September 26, fans were introduced to the redesigned Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
"While he is truly irreplaceable, ... we wanted to ensure his legacy lives on," commented host Julianne Hough. "It's amazing that Len will forever be a part of our journey."
DWTS executive producer Conrad Green has announced a decision to rename the show's highly sought-after trophy. In a statement to USA Today on September 20, Green revealed that the trophy will now be known as the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. The aim of this change is to honor Len Goodman's significant contributions to Dancing With the Stars and to ensure his lasting presence on the show.
