Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist's breakup was mainly due to their struggle to decide where to live. However, Theresa's job also contributed significantly to their relationship issues.
Before they announced their split, the Golden Bachelor stars discussed how Theresa's job created conflicts between them. On a March episode of the “Dear Shandy” podcast, Theresa, 70, mentioned, "I still work, so that’s the hurdle."
Theresa was surprised by how long she ended up staying on The Golden Bachelor, as she had initially only planned to be away for two weeks. She admitted, "I honestly thought, 'Oh, let me just get through the first night,' and I stayed and I stayed and I stayed. My employer was so good to me, and before I left, I reassured them, 'Don't worry, I'm not going to leave you.'"
While Theresa doesn't intend to work until she's 80, her career played a role in her and Gerry, 72, maintaining a long-distance relationship after their January wedding. She explained, "Until we decide on a place to really live, then I can make a big decision to say, 'OK, we're going to live in this place or that place.' Originally, we were thinking South Carolina, but we're still unsure if that's the right choice."
Gerry mentioned that he goes through different phases regarding how he feels about Theresa's work. He explained that he joined the show to find a partner after being retired for a long time. He was looking for fun, adventure, and the opportunity to do things he enjoys. The main issue for him now is figuring out when he can start experiencing that freedom. He believes that the living arrangement is not as important as being able to go out and enjoy life.
He added that they are still facing the challenge of finding a way to overcome this hurdle. It's something they are currently working on and trying to find a solution for.
Theresa shared her journey in the finance industry on The Golden Bachelor. In her 40s, she took it upon herself to learn about the stock market by reading books at the library and watching financial news channels like CNBC and Bloomberg. She even interned at CNBC for a brief period. Although she no longer daytrades, she continues to work in the industry with a company she values, holding a position she is passionate about and surrounded by colleagues she admires.

Theresa addressed the divorce through a heartfelt Instagram post on April 15, where she shared a Dr. Seuss quote about embracing change. She expressed gratitude for the support from fans and described her marriage with Gerry as an unforgettable experience.
She continued by saying that she never expected this to happen at this stage of her life. She thought it would last forever. But at 70, she realized that you can't predict everything. Sometimes things don't go as planned, and that's perfectly fine.
