The Ghostbusters franchise is set to introduce a new version of its iconic logo in the upcoming sequel, Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. The film, previously referred to as Firehouse during development, is scheduled for release in December 2023 and will feature returning stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd as the new generation of Ghostbusters. Additionally, the film will see the return of original cast members Ernie Hudson and William Atherton. The official Ghostbusters Twitter account recently unveiled a poster featuring a frozen version of the classic logo, sparking speculation about the film's official title.
Does The New Ghostbusters Logo Suggest A Return To Ghostbusters: Hellbent?
The release of the new Ghostbusters logo for the upcoming sequel sparked a wave of speculation about its possible implications for the movie's plot and official title. Many experts in the field ventured their guesses, with some even suggesting a connection to Dan Ackroyd's original plans for Ghostbusters III. Among the proposed titles were Ghostbusters: A Cold Day in Hell and Ghostbusters: Hell Freezes Over, fueling even more excitement and curiosity among fans of the franchise.
Plans for a third Ghostbusters film were already in motion before Jason Reitman took over as director from his father Ivan. Written by Ackroyd, the film was set to be a direct sequel to Ghostbusters II, with the original team coming out of retirement to tackle a new ghost problem in Manhattan's alternate Hell dimension. The movie, called Ghostbusters: Hellbent, would have also introduced a new generation of Ghostbusters, featuring the likes of Chris Farley, Chris Rock, and Ben Stiller.
It is unclear at this time if Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 will draw inspiration from Dan Ackroyd's original concepts for Ghostbusters: Hellbent. However, the recently revealed logo has brought these ideas back into the public eye. Additionally, the fact that the new film will take place in New York City has led to speculation that it may incorporate Ackroyd's concept of a hellish version of Manhattan known as Manhellton. The depiction of freezing in the logo could also suggest a freezing over of Hell, leading to an influx of ghosts in New York from displaced souls. These theories, however, are merely speculation without further evidence. It is possible that Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 will introduce a new threat that is completely original. As the release date approaches, fans eagerly anticipate more information and an official title announcement.
