Ernie Hudson, who reprised his role as Winston Zeddemore in Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, has confirmed that filming for the movie is officially complete. Unlike his co-stars, Hudson's character has a purposeful return in the sequel, using his wealth to restore the Ghostbusters firehouse and Ecto-1, setting the stage for a new generation of ghostbusters.
During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, while promoting his film Prisoner's Daughter, Hudson provided an update on Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. He not only confirmed that filming is finished, but also mentioned the potential for the sequel's release date to be adjusted due to potential strikes from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. However, Sony is currently determined to stick to their planned release date.
Yeah, we've completed the shooting of the movie and now it's a wrap. Of course, there's still the editing process and other tasks to be done. There are rumors that they will aim to release it by the end of the year or maybe in the spring of next year. I can never predict how the studios will handle things, but at least the filming is done. It was a bit challenging with the writers strike and all the other ongoing issues. There was a lot of rearranging in terms of the shooting locations, but I'm grateful that we managed to get it done and now, like everyone else, I'm eagerly waiting to see the final result.
Will Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 Keep Its 2023 Release?
The uncertainty caused by the writers strike and potential actors strike has cast a shadow of doubt over Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2's December 20, 2023 release date. In the entertainment industry, numerous productions have been forced to halt or delay due to concerns raised by both on-screen and behind-the-camera talent. These concerns revolve around the perceived unfairness of streaming residuals and the potential threat of artificial intelligence replacing their jobs.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 concluding production despite co-writer and director Gil Kenan's involvement bodes well for the sequel's 2023 release. The need for additional filming seems unlikely, considering the comparable timeline to its 2021 predecessor. The main potential obstacle to a timely release could be Sony's aim to avoid competition from the upcoming movies Wonka and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, scheduled to release around the same time. Given the success of the first Ghostbusters: Afterlife and the possibility of finding a more advantageous release window, it may be wise to prioritize the sequel's potential for thriving in theaters.
