Highlights
Discard Potions until level 10, when Super Potions are unlocked. Keep them to heal low-HP Pokemon.
Retain Hyper Potions and Max Potions as they are the optimal items for restoring HP and can be obtained by spinning PokeStops.
Dispose of ordinary berries like Razz Berries and Nanab Berries when the inventory becomes crowded. Preserve Golden Razz Berries and Silver Pinap Berries for capturing uncommon or legendary Pokemon.
Trainers who constantly spin PokeStops/Gyms or open Gifts in Pokemon GO may find their item storage filling up rapidly. If they lack sufficient Coins to expand their storage, they will need to discard items to create more space. The dilemma of deciding which items to keep and which to let go might leave trainers uncertain.
Regrettably, unlike the mainline games, selling items is not an option in Pokemon GO. Therefore, trainers should exercise caution and be discerning when freeing up storage space. It is advisable to refrain from discarding the more common items until they can begin acquiring the more potent versions, such as Potions and Hyper Potions.
Discard: Potions
Trainers beginning their Pokemon GO journey will initially have access to Potions for healing their Pokemon. These Potions restore 20HP and are the weakest option available in the game. It is recommended that players do not discard these Potions until they reach level 10 or higher, as they will then unlock Super Potions which restore 60HP.
Potions can be obtained as common rewards from spinning PokeStop/Gym Discs. However, once players start collecting Super, Hyper, and Max Potions, these 20HP Potions can take up valuable space in their bag. It should be noted that healing a Pokemon with high CP in the red/orange zone will require more than 20HP. Therefore, if players still choose to hoard Potions, it is best to save them for healing Pokemon that only need a small amount of HP restored.
Keep: Hyper Potions & Max Potions
Pokemon GO players can unlock Hyper Potions once they reach level 15, while Max Potions become available at level 25. A Hyper Potion restores 200HP, while a Max Potion restores full health. As players progress and earn these potions, they can receive them as rewards by spinning PokeStops.
In addition to spinning PokeStops, players can also obtain Hyper Potions by defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders. Max Potions, on the other hand, can only be purchased from the in-game store. Considering that these potions are considered the best for restoring HP in Pokemon GO, it is advised to never discard them. Instead, players should consider removing regular Potions or Super Potions if space needs to be made.
Discard: Incense
Incense is used to attract Pokemon. When trainers are on the move, a Pokemon will appear. Unlike wild Pokemon, these will have either a purple mist (Incense) or a blue mist (Daily Incense) surrounding them.
Regular Incense lasts for 60 minutes. During events, the Incense turns orange and can last even longer, such as 2 hours. Daily Incense, on the other hand, lasts for 15 minutes and is given for free as long as players do not already have one. Since wild Pokemon can be common and Incense only works when players are moving, it is a relatively safe item to discard. However, it is important to check for any Special Research Tasks that require the use of Incense before getting rid of them.
Keep: Stardust & Lucky Eggs
In Pokemon GO, trainers gain experience instead of the Pokemon leveling up. When players reach certain milestones, they unlock rewards and features such as "nominating" a PokeStop at level 37. To increase the rate of experience gained, trainers can use a Lucky Egg, which doubles the EXP for 30 minutes.
Stardust is a versatile item used for Powering Up, purifying, trading, and learning new moves. Trainers can obtain Stardust by catching Pokemon, but it's important to note that it can be depleted quickly. Similar to a Lucky Egg, using Stardust doubles the Stardust count instead of experience.
Lucky Eggs and Stardust, awarded for completing specific research tasks, should not be discarded if trainers aim to quickly level up or boost the strength of their Pokemon.
Discard: Common Berries
Trainers can collect three common types of Berries: Razz Berries, Pinap Berries, and Nanab Berries. Each Berry has a distinct effect on a Pokemon before tossing a Poke Ball.
Razz Berries make the Pokemon "friendlier" and increases the chance of catching it.
Pinap Berries double the Candy
earned on a successful catch.
Nanab Berries calm the Pokemon and keep it from "fighting back" against the Poke Ball or jumping out of the way.
Berries are readily available as rewards for completing Field Research Tasks and spinning PokeStops. As long as players are in proximity to PokeStops or engaged in Field Research, they will have an ample supply of Razz, Pinap, or Nanab Berries. Additionally, these Berries can be obtained from a Great Buddy Pokemon as a Gift or through Friend Gifts.
Keep: Golden Razz Berry & Silver Pinap Berry
The rarest Berries in the game are Golden Razz Berries and Silver Pinap Berries. They have the same function as Razz Berries and Pinap Berries respectively, but their effects are doubled. Silver Pinap Berries not only double the amount of Candy obtained, but they also increase the chances of catching the Pokémon, essentially combining the powers of a Razz Berry and a Pinap Berry into one.
Players won't acquire these items by spinning PokeStops or finishing Field Research. Instead, they are occasionally rewarded through Special Research or Timed Research. The most convenient method to obtain them, particularly Golden Razz Berries, is by triumphing in Raids. Due to their scarcity, players should only utilize them when attempting to capture a Legendary Pokemon (either from Giovanni or a Raid).
Discard: Lure Modules
To attract Pokemon to a PokeStop, trainers can use Lure Modules. Consequently, if an area is abundant with PokeStops, trainers may not find it necessary to deploy a Lure Module since someone else is likely to do so beforehand. While regular pink Lure Modules can be discarded, it might be wise for players to hold onto the other variations.
Keep: Poffins
Lure Modules, including the Magnetic Lure Module and the Mossy Lure Module, have the ability to facilitate the evolution of certain Pokemon. Additionally, they have the power to attract Pokemon that correspond to the specific type of Module used (for instance, the Magnetic Lure Module is particularly effective in attracting Steel-type Pokemon). It is recommended to save these valuable items for the precise moments when Pokemon GO players intend to evolve Pokemon such as Eevee or Magneton.
If Golden Razz Berries and Silver Pinap Berries are considered rare, then Poffins are even more exceptional. While they cannot be used during encounters, they can be fed to the Buddy Pokemon.
Feeding a Poffin will result in a doubling of Hearts earned from Buddy Activities and will also extend the time that the Buddy Pokemon remains outside the Poke Ball to 6 hours instead of the usual 3 hours. Occasionally, Poffins can be obtained as a reward for scanning PokeStops through Field Research, but finding them for free is not a common occurrence.
Poffins can be purchased for 100 PokeCoins at the in-game Shop. It is advisable to save them for Ultra Buddy Tier Buddy Pokemon. This is because Poffins facilitate the leveling up of Buddy Pokemon more effectively than Berries. Players should ideally use Poffins when they anticipate being engaged in Pokemon GO for a duration exceeding 4 hours.
Discard: Mysterious Components
Players may encounter Team GO Rocket Balloons on the map, while Rocket Grunts can be found at PokeStops. A successful battle against them presents an opportunity for players to capture one of their Shadow Pokemon. As a reward, players also receive a Mystery Component. By collecting 6 Mystery Components, players can combine them to create a Rocket Radar. This valuable item is then utilized to track down the Team GO Rocket Leaders: Cliff, Arlo, or Sierra.
Keep: Ultra Balls
Players should not discard Mysterious Components if they are in the midst of completing quests that require them to defeat the Rocket Leaders. However, if these components are taking up valuable inventory space, it is advisable to dispose of one or two. It is worth noting that Team GO Rocket Grunts can be found all around, making it relatively easy to obtain a Rocket Radar by simply engaging in battles with them whenever they appear on the map.
The Ultra Ball is considered the superior Poke Ball among those obtained from PokeStops/Gyms. It boasts a higher catch rate compared to the Great Ball, making it exclusive to more experienced players. Unlocking at level 20, Ultra Balls cannot be purchased directly from the in-game shop but are occasionally offered in generous quantities as part of Limited Time Only! boxes.
Trainers should avoid discarding Ultra Balls as they are highly valuable in the world of Poke Balls. It is generally not advisable to get rid of any Poke Balls, as they play a crucial role in capturing more Pokemon and advancing in levels. However, in the choice between the Poke Ball, Great Ball, and Ultra Ball, players should prioritize keeping the Ultra Ball. It is recommended to utilize them on rare or powerful Pokemon with high Combat Power (CP).
