Following a recent agreement between competitors, James Cameron's Avatar movies will soon be accessible for home viewing on a rival platform, rather than exclusively on Disney's Disney Plus streaming service, the IP holder. Originally released in 2009, Avatar captivated audiences with its groundbreaking visual effects and unparalleled cinematic experience. The film's enormous success at the box office propelled it to become one of the highest-grossing projects of all time. The highly anticipated sequel, which generated record-breaking buzz comparable to Star Wars even before its release, also exceeded expectations at the box office. Additionally, the first film was re-released to further heighten anticipation for the subsequent installment.

Despite director Cameron's criticism of streaming, his films have found their way onto the Disney Plus platform. However, fans without the service now have another option. The Warner Bros Discovery-owned streaming platform Max recently announced that the original Avatar film will be added to its library on August 17th. Max had already secured rights to Avatar 2: The Way of Water, making both installments of Cameron's acclaimed work available on the streaming platform. This is likely because the rights were obtained before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and the IP.

Cameron and Disney ensured that it was widely known that the best way to experience the movies was in theaters, even going as far as removing Avatar from Disney Plus during the re-release. Therefore, they may not see the value in keeping the content exclusive, as dedicated fans likely have already seen the movies multiple times on the big screen. Additionally, there may be contractual obligations involved in this decision.

Regardless of the reasons, this is great news for Avatar fans and Cameron, as the expanded streaming availability will allow more people to watch the films while they wait for the next project to be released.
