HoYoverse's CEO Liu Wei acknowledges the early accusations of plagiarism faced by Genshin Impact, highlighting the team's struggles during the game's development.

Despite facing initial criticism, Genshin Impact has gained immense popularity with millions of active players and has achieved remarkable success through its lucrative gacha banners, generating millions of dollars in revenue. As the CEO of the company discloses, the development process took a heavy emotional toll on the team, resulting in instances where employees were moved to tears. However, their hard work and dedication have ultimately paid off, as the game has garnered numerous accolades and set the stage for future triumphs.

During his speech at Genshin Impact FES 2023, HoYoverse's CEO, Liu Wei, discussed the initial plagiarism accusations faced by the game. Despite these challenges, Genshin Impact has become one of the most popular titles in the gaming world since its launch in 2020, attracting millions of active players. The game's gacha banners consistently generate over $10 million USD in China alone with each new character release. With this recent speech, the CEO has reminded players of the obstacles the development team overcame in the early stages of the game's development. Prior to its launch, Genshin Impact faced criticism for resembling The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with some fans even resorting to damaging their consoles as a form of protest. The CEO's speech shed light on the difficulties the Genshin Impact team faced due to these accusations.

During the Shanghai Genshin Impact FES 2023, HoYoverse CEO Liu Wei, also known as Dawei, discussed the challenging process behind creating Genshin Impact. Dawei revealed that production for Genshin Impact started as early as 2017, without the developer having its own in-house development engine. He shared examples of employees experiencing emotional distress and facing harsh critiques of the RPG while it was still in development. Dawei used the city of Liyue as inspiration, motivating the team to showcase a different side of Genshin Impact to the players.

Despite the team's significant mental struggles during the development of Genshin Impact, their efforts paid off for the studio. Genshin Impact has rapidly gained popularity and received numerous accolades, including the "Player's Voice" Award at the 2022 Game Awards. HoYoverse later leveraged the success of Genshin Impact to launch another highly successful game, Honkai: Star Rail, earlier this year.

Dawei's revelations regarding the turbulent development of Genshin Impact come at a critical time, as the RPG gears up for its most significant update of the year. This update will unveil the highly anticipated playable region of Fontaine, complete with immersive features such as diving and underwater combat. Additionally, three new characters, namely Lyney, Lynette, and Freminet, will be introduced as the first playable characters from Fontaine. Genshin Impact's triumphs are a testament to the resilience of its development team and bode well for HoYoverse's prosperous future.

Genshin Impact is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile platforms, with a Switch version currently under development.
