A Diablo 4 player suffered a devastating loss when they lost their level 92 character due to a costly error during their Hardcore run. Unfortunately, this happened just as Diablo 4 removed its toughest challenge, temporarily eliminating the motivation to rush towards level 100 in Hardcore mode. As with previous installments of Blizzard's ARPG series, Diablo 4 includes Hardcore mode as the ultimate test for experienced players. This permadeath option is primarily for boasting rights, although the game does offer a variety of exclusive titles for defeating certain bosses in Hardcore mode.
Even experienced players are struggling to maintain focus during the challenge, as the game becomes increasingly difficult at higher levels. Max "Maximum" Smith from Team Liquid recently lost his level 92 character during a Hardcore race due to a momentary lapse of concentration. He expressed disbelief and regret, exclaiming "No, no, no, I'm so stupid," while his Twitch chat exploded with reactions to the unfortunate end of his Hardcore campaign.
Before his recent failed Hardcore run in Diablo 4, Maximum had already experienced a devastating loss. Just under a week ago during the beta period, his level 52 Sorceress met an unfortunate fate after being frozen due to a glitch. The bug left the character immobile and unable to heal, causing her demise within seconds. Maximum had invested a grueling 18 hours into leveling the Sorceress, and although he initially expressed reluctance to attempt the level 100 pinnacle challenge again following the frustrating experience, he eventually did so. While it's unclear how much time he had put into his now-deceased level 92 character, given the time it takes to reach level 100 in the game, it's likely that his latest failed run lasted for upwards of 70 hours.
Blizzard had promised to immortalize the names of the initial 1,000 Hardcore mode players who reached level 100 on a statue of Lilith in Diablo 4. However, the ultimate challenge has been put on hold since June 6 due to reported issues from the player community. In order to provide a more seamless experience, the developers have postponed the game's toughest challenge until they can resolve these problems. Diablo 4 is now available on multiple platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
