Highlights
Baldur's Gate 3 has garnered high praise from David Gaider, a former BioWare developer, who considers it a worthy successor to the beloved Baldur's Gate 2. Gaider commends the game for successfully capturing the essence of the original and the evident passion that went into its development.
Although currently only available on PC, Baldur's Gate 3 has achieved remarkable success, attracting over 875,000 players simultaneously on Steam at its launch, and potentially even more on GOG.
Acknowledging the game's imperfections, Gaider highlights bugs, issues with romances, and a lacking epilogue. Nonetheless, he views Baldur's Gate 3 as a significant milestone in the industry, demonstrating that features like a silent protagonist and turn-based combat can still thrive in contemporary titles.
Former BioWare developer David Gaider recently praised Baldur’s Gate 3 as a worthy successor to Baldur’s Gate 2, joining several critics who have hailed it as one of the best RPGs of 2023. It is always reassuring to see someone involved in the franchise's development holding such a positive opinion about the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has emerged as one of the major success stories of 2023, despite it only being available for PC at the moment. During its launch, the game reached an impressive milestone of over 875,000 simultaneous players on Steam alone. Considering the availability on GOG as well, the actual number of players may be even higher.
Former BioWare narrative designer and writer David Gaider, renowned for his work on popular games such as Baldur's Gate 2, recently shared his thoughts on the new title. According to Gaider, Larian's latest game successfully captures the essence of playing BG2 and showcases a remarkable amount of love and care put into its creation. Despite incorporating elements often deemed incompatible with modern titles, such as a silent protagonist and turn-based combat, Baldur's Gate 3 triumphs. However, Gaider does acknowledge areas for improvement, including various bugs, the execution of romances, and the absence of a more satisfying epilogue.
Having dedicated his talent to BioWare from 1999 to 2016, Gaider contributed to outstanding titles like BG2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age: Origins. Following his departure from the company, he worked at Beamdog for two years before co-founding Summerfall Studios, the developers behind the recently released urban fantasy RPG called Stray Gods. The release of Stray Gods was strategically delayed to prevent overlapping with the launch of Baldur's Gate 3.
BG3 is currently only available for PC, but it will be released for PS5 in September. The development for Xbox has encountered some challenges as the game needs gameplay feature parity on both Microsoft consoles. The Xbox Series S doesn't have enough power for Larian Studios to include split-screen co-op. However, Microsoft has granted Larian permission to launch the game on Xbox without this feature in order to expedite its release. There's still hope that a split-screen mode could be included in the future for the Xbox Series S version of Baldur's Gate 3.
