Former Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards revealed that Aaron Rodgers was the most prepared guest host during the show's search to replace Alex Trebek. Richards, 48, shared with People that the show initially planned to audition guest hosts temporarily while Trebek battled pancreatic cancer.
Richards shared in an interview that they had discussed the possibility of having guest hosts fill in if Alex became too ill. It was always understood that Alex would return until he felt unable to continue.
During the time when various guest hosts like Katie Couric, Joe Buck, Anderson Cooper, Mayim Bialik, and Ken Jennings took turns hosting the show, Rodgers surprised Richards with his standout performance.
Aaron Rodgers, the 40-year-old Jets quarterback, stood out as the most prepared, according to Richards. He was amazed by Rodgers' intense preparation and his friendly demeanor towards the staff. However, Richards couldn't help but worry about Rodgers' other high-level job and how he would balance it with his football schedule. Rodgers simply responded, "You'll figure it out!"
Rodgers' own recount of his guest appearance in 2021 further demonstrates why Richards was so impressed.
Rodgers shared with ESPN in April 2021 that he spent countless hours watching episodes of the show. He mentioned how he relied on Netflix and his DVR to catch up on multiple seasons. However, he emphasized that he now had to watch from a different perspective - focusing on Alex's point of view rather than just being a fan.
In addition, Rodgers mentioned how he meticulously took notes while studying for the show. He made sure to jot down every affirmative response given by Alex, as well as how he handled incorrect answers. He also detailed the key points of the show, including the transitions before and after commercial breaks. His dedication to preparing for the role was evident as he expressed his determination to excel in his performance.

Richards praised Buck and Roberts as guest hosts, noting Buck adapted quickly and Roberts was extremely kind. He also questioned whether not picking Couric was a mistake in refreshing the show.
Richards, who was a former guest host himself, ended up being chosen as the permanent replacement for Trebek after his passing in November 2020. However, his time as host was short-lived due to facing immediate controversy.
He remembered how upset everyone was when it seemed like he had chosen himself for a role in a room. He knew that's not how things work in television, but he understood why it looked that way.
Only nine days after the announcement, Richards resigned as host. This happened due to a lawsuit from his time on The Price is Right and some offensive remarks he had made on his podcast in the past. Surprisingly, he had only been host for one day.
Three years later, Jennings is now the permanent host of Jeopardy!, which is currently airing its 40th season.
Editor's P/S:
Mike Richards' revelations about Aaron Rodgers' exceptional guest hosting performance on Jeopardy! underscore the importance of thorough preparation and dedication to excellence. Rodgers' meticulous study of the show, including his focus on Alex Trebek's hosting style, demonstrates his commitment to delivering a compelling experience for viewers. His ability to balance his NFL career with his hosting duties is also a testament to his professionalism and ability to prioritize his responsibilities.
Richards' own experience as a guest host and subsequent controversy highlight the challenges associated with replacing an iconic figure like Trebek. While Richards' selection as permanent host was met with initial excitement, his short-lived tenure serves as a reminder that the public's perception and the complexities of the entertainment industry can quickly overshadow individual qualifications. Despite the setbacks, Jeopardy! has found a worthy successor in Ken Jennings, who brings his extensive knowledge and enthusiastic personality to the role.
