FKA Twigs Stands Strong Against UK Ban of Her Calvin Klein Ad: 'I Refuse to Let My Story Be Altered'

FKA Twigs stands firm against the UK ban on her Calvin Klein ad, refusing to let her story be twisted She responds with a powerful statement, asserting her autonomy and rejecting the portrayal of herself as a mere 'sexual object'

In the U.K., FKA Twigs’ nude pose in the March 2023 Calvin Klein ad has been banned. The Advertising Standards Authority announced their decision on January 10, claiming that the campaign depicts the 36-year-old singer as a "stereotypical sexual object."

The ASA explained in an official statement that the organization had received two complaints regarding the black-and-white promotional images featuring Twigs in a bra and jeans, stating that they were "overly sexualized, offensive, and irresponsible as they objectified women."

In response to the ruling, Calvin Klein denied that the photos were harmful and described themselves as a "pioneering and progressive brand engaged in equity and equality focused partnerships." They also pointed to past interviews with Twigs and Kendall Jenner, who also participated in the spring campaign, where they expressed feeling a sense of empowerment and confidence from their involvement.

Additionally, Calvin Klein stressed that the company is an underwear brand, “so a degree of nudity should be expected.”

FKA twigs shared a post on her Instagram account. The ASA ruled that Jenner's ads were not considered irresponsible or offensive, but Twigs' campaign allegedly focused on her body rather than the clothes.

Twigs has spoken out against the decision, posting a detailed statement on Instagram on Wednesday.

"I am not just a 'stereotypical sexual object,'" Twigs stated. "I am a powerful woman of color with a body that has overcome incredible pain."

Twigs expressed concern about potential double standards after reviewing similar campaigns, remarking on the contrast between female and male representations. In addition to Jenner and Twigs, Michael B. Jordan appeared shirtless in fitted boxers. Calvin Klein also featured Jeremy Allen White in their spring 2024 campaign, showing him in a wet T-shirt with his body hair exposed.

Twigs continued by expressing, "I take pride in my physical presence and strive to create art with my body that reflects the standards set by trailblazing women such as Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Grace Jones, who redefined what it means to be empowered and exude a distinct, embodied sensuality."
