The development team of Final Fantasy 14 wanted to add the Pixel Remaster series as playable games in the Gold Saucer area.
Despite the complexity of running the remastered games on "middleware," they have been unable to do so.
However, Final Fantasy 14 Director Naoki Yoshida remains optimistic about the idea.
Square Enix's Final Fantasy 14 development team has disclosed their desire to incorporate the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series as playable games within the MMORPG's Gold Saucer zone. The Gold Saucer in Final Fantasy 14 is renowned for hosting various FF-themed mini-games, making it a logical choice for developers to introduce additional ones.
With a plethora of news and updates circulating online, particularly following the conclusion of the United States leg of the 2023 Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival, there is heightened anticipation surrounding the MMORPG. Attendees of the event were fortunate enough to witness the unveiling of the upcoming expansion, Dawntrail, and gain exclusive insights into the final content update for Endwalker. Interviews with the development team continue to demonstrate the extensive amount of content they have prepared for both current and future players.
As per GamesRadar+, during an interview, Final Fantasy 14 Director Naoki Yoshida unveiled the team's intention of incorporating the Pixel Remaster series as playable games in the Gold Saucer. Square Enix enthusiasts will likely remember that this series comprises six games, spanning from the first Final Fantasy installment to Final Fantasy 6, and was recently launched in April 2023. According to Yoshida, the team had initially planned to introduce the collection as games within the Gold Saucer to coincide with the series' release this year. Unfortunately, this plan couldn't be executed due to the reliance of the remastered games on specialized software, known as "middleware."
Yoshida explained the steps involved in incorporating the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection into the MMORPG. This would require the creation of a separate system within the game to support these remastered games. The process is complex, and it may not be pursued fully due to other development priorities in the Final Fantasy 14 pipeline. Despite this, Yoshida remains optimistic about the idea and hopes to implement it in the future.
As the announcement of Final Fantasy 14's Dawntrail is still fresh, these details may be minor information for the MMORPG's player base. Their focus is already on the upcoming expansion, with high expectations of it matching the quality of its predecessors.
Final Fantasy 14 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, with an Xbox Series X/S version launching in Spring 2024.
