However, the SAG-AFTRA strike has affected the release of Yellowstone season 5, part 2, putting its intended release date in jeopardy. Nevertheless, the first half of the season proceeded smoothly, featuring episodes filled with captivating drama that built up to a shocking conclusion in the final half-season. One such episode is "Tall Drink of Water," from season 5, which holds significant implications for the future of the Dutton family.
A Young John & Rip Flashback Has Consequences In The Present Day
The episode titled "Tall Drink of Water" begins with a flashback to the past, where a young John Dutton (played by Josh Lucas) embarks on a quest to find his scattered cattle, only to discover that they have been attacked by wolves. In order to address this issue, a town meeting is held, where numerous ranchers express their frustration with the government's decision to introduce non-native wolf species near their land. The local representative from the Fish & Wildlife department defends the innocence of the wolves, but John Dutton, who arrives late, confirms that the wolves were indeed responsible for the cattle mutilation. This infuriates the ranchers, who vow to take matters into their own hands.
In the present day, Rip (played by Cole Hauser) is approached by agents from the Fish & Wildlife department, who inform him that they had been tracking a pack of wolves that had been on the ranch for three days before disappearing. Rip claims to have no knowledge about it, but agrees to accompany the agents as they follow the digital signal of the wolves along a trail. The journey leads them to a dangerous pass, which is also close to the location where the wolves from the previous episode, "The Sting of Wisdom," were buried after being killed. The political implications of Governor John Dutton's decision to order the killing of endangered wolves could potentially bring about his downfall in the political arena.
Beth Closes The Salt Lake City Deal
In the Yellowstone episode "Tall Drink of Water," Beth (Kelly Reilly) reaches a turning point in her dealings with Market Equities. She travels to Salt Lake City to present an offer to their competitor, Schwartz & Meyer. Beth proposes that Rob Baldus (Aaron Lazar) of S&M can purchase her controlling interest in the firm for a significant discount. However, this arouses suspicion in Rob. Beth reassures him that her intention is to undermine Market Equities and asks him to simply sign the deal, which will initiate the downfall of their biggest rival. She plans to achieve this through a land conservation easement, which greatly disadvantages ME.
Market Equities discovers that their lawsuit against Beth has been weakened, but they remain determined to bring her down. Caroline Warner (Jackie Weaver) insists on sending Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri in the Yellowstone season 5 cast) to investigate how to take down the entire Dutton family, particularly Beth. With such a large sum of money at stake, Beth has put herself in the crosshairs of unscrupulous individuals, and things could become highly personal in the second half of Yellowstone season 5.
Kayce & Monica Are Still Grieving
With the recent miscarriage weighing heavily on their hearts, Monica (Kelsey Albille) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) from Yellowstone season 5, episode 2, "The Sting of Wisdom," find themselves mourning in contrasting ways. Seeking guidance from Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas (Gil Birmingham), Kayce starts to question his chosen path and is compelled by a vision urging him to leave his job and prioritize his family. Kayce contemplates quitting as Livestock Commissioner and aspires to join the Bureau of Indian Affairs. However, Thomas disagrees due to the Bureau's contentious treatment of indigenous people, leaving Monica overcome by abrupt waves of sorrowful weeping.
Jamie Gets Closer To Atwood
Demonstrating her prowess as a crafty legal strategist, Sarah Atwood deftly employed a clever maneuver against Jamie (Wes Bently) in a scene reminiscent of a timeless courtroom thriller. With Market Equities serving him official documents, Jamie unexpectedly finds himself face-to-face with the formidable duo of Atwood and Ellis Steele (John Emmet Tracy), embodying the pinnacle of legal expertise. The ongoing clash between Beth and Jamie within Yellowstone season 5 takes an intriguing twist as the disgruntled Steele abruptly storms out of the contentious meeting.
Remaining behind after saying very little, Sarah calmly and rationally explained her position and politely conveyed to Jamie the precarious situation he finds himself in. According to Sarah, the new zoning laws implemented by Governor Dutton are not beneficial for anyone, and she artfully intertwines her speech with numerous compliments. Ultimately, she extends an invitation to dinner to Jamie, who strategically avoids accepting or rejecting it. After Sarah left Jamie's office, she and Steele shared a private moment to revel in their intricately executed subterfuge.
Lloyd's Birthday Party Ends In A Barfight
Throughout the episode,
the Bunkhouse Boys playfully teased Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) as his 70th birthday approached. They had planned for a quiet evening of celebration at the bunkhouse. However, Beth arrived, brimming with triumph from her recent victory, and insisted on taking the party up a notch by heading to a bar in Boseman. Despite Rip's reservations, the group decides to visit a local bar where Ryan (Ian Bohen) reconnects with country singer Abby (Lainey Wilson) whom he had previously met. The festivities go smoothly until another woman shows up and tries to flirt with Rip.
Beth is confronted by a woman who clearly has ill intentions, as pointed out by Rip. Uncontrollably consumed by anger, Beth smashes a beer bottle over the woman's head, sparking a chaotic barfight. The police are called, and although everyone else is released, Beth is held responsible for taking a subsequent swing at her opponent in the presence of law enforcement. Rip tries to caution Sheriff Ramsey about the potential political ramifications of arresting Beth, but the officer remains unaffected and proceeds to charge her with aggravated assault. As Yellowstone season 5, episode 3, "Tall Drink of Water" concludes, Beth is apprehended and taken to jail.
