"The Reign of Marvel Studios" uncovers additional evidence of bullying and systematic efforts to diminish screenwriter Nicole Perlman's role in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Stentz, a friend and co-writer of Perlman, discloses that Gunn attempted to exclude Perlman from the Marvel circle and leaked information to diminish her contribution. Despite the ongoing controversies, Perlman acknowledges and appreciates the efforts of everyone involved in the film, including James Gunn. No response from Gunn regarding Stentz's statements has been received.
A close friend and fellow screenwriter has now taken over as a co-writer for Guardians of the Galaxy, replacing Nicole Perlman. This development has increased speculation about what really happened between Perlman and James Gunn during the production of the Marvel Studios film.
Gunn's journey to becoming the new CEO of DC Studios has been marred by controversy. It all began when Disney fired him from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 due to offensive tweets from his past and his involvement in a pedophile-themed party that included a convicted pedophile. However, these incidents are not the only source of concern. Additional allegations have surfaced, suggesting that Gunn employed bullying tactics to establish himself as the sole writer of Guardians of the Galaxy, sidelining Perlman.
Joanna Robinson's book, "The Reign of Marvel Studios," reveals that Perlman initially wrote the original story and screenplay for Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, which incorporated various iconic elements seen in the film, such as Star Lord's backstory and his love for retro music. However, Gunn eventually took over and rewrote the screenplay. Despite this, Perlman still deserves recognition as a co-writer according to WGA guidelines. Zack Stentz, Perlman's friend and co-writer of the Thor screenplay, sheds light on the challenges Perlman faced behind the scenes to receive proper credit. Stentz explains, "Nicole had to fight tooth and nail for her credit on Guardians of the Galaxy. But she has now become one of the most prominent female writers in the action genre because she was not only the first woman to have her name on a Marvel movie but also on one that people truly adore."
Stentz further reveals the extent to which Gunn attempted to marginalize Perlman within the Marvel community. Stentz recounts, "She threw a party called the 'Fuck James Gunn' party when the movie was released because she had emerged victorious from that harsh credit arbitration battle. What still angers me, and I say this as a fan of James Gunn as a director, is that he deliberately leaked information to his friends and the fanboy media to undermine her rightful credit." Stentz continues, "When Matthew Vaughnn decided to throw a tantrum over screen credit on X-Men: First Class, at least he did it under his own name." In her book, Perlman acknowledges everyone involved in the movie, including James Gunn, for their contributions in making it a visually stunning piece of art. Gunn has not responded to Stentz's allegations thus far.
While some may argue that Gunn has learned from his mistakes, others believe otherwise, citing examples of similar tactics used against Perlman in the media. These statements contradict the accounts of Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Zack Snyder, and Henry Cavill. As fans eagerly anticipate the future of DC, there is a sense of uncertainty surrounding the DCU, with rumors suggesting that Universal is vying to acquire WBD.
Perlman's interest in screenwriting originally stemmed from her passion for science fiction. She has been involved with the Science and Entertainment Exchange to ensure the authenticity of what audiences see in movies. She received credit for writing the original screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy, which she clarified was not based on any specific comic book. Meanwhile, Gunn worked on other films while completing the screenplay for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy is available on Disney Plus.
