Overwatch 2's BlizzCon 2023 presentation showcased the new tank hero Mauga, but there may be another tank hero hidden in the footage.
At BlizzCon 2023, footage from the hero selection screen at Overwatch 2 revealed the inclusion of a yet-to-be-named tank character, portrayed by a temporary image.
Overwatch 2 is also welcoming two upcoming additions to its hero roster: Venture, along with an unnamed Support hero known as the Space Ranger codename.
During the BlizzCon 2023 Overwatch 2 presentation, the spotlight was on Mauga, a Samoan tank hero who wields dual miniguns. However, it appears that Blizzard may have secretly revealed another tank hero in the footage. Along with Mauga, Overwatch 2 will introduce a new PvP mode and revamp its Competitive Rank system. Players will now see their rank progress update after each match, eliminating the need to complete five games to determine their standing.
Blizzard has plans to expand the hero roster in Overwatch 2 over the next few seasons. Two new characters have been announced, including Venture, a Canadian damage hero who is Overwatch's first non-binary playable character. Venture can burrow underground and also launch a projectile that explodes after traveling a certain distance. The identity of the other hero remains a mystery, but Blizzard has mentioned that she will be a Support hero with a codename of Space Ranger. Her playstyle will emphasize high mobility and vertical movement.
However, astute social media users have noticed the potential arrival of a fourth hero in Overwatch 2. In video footage of the hero selection screen, a placeholder image was seen for a new tank character positioned between Sigma and Winston. This has sparked speculation among players, wondering if Sound Quake, teased in the Overwatch announcement trailer back in 2014, will finally make an appearance. Reddit user Bauernworldwide and Twitter user DylanDubs were among those who spotted this mysterious hero, igniting a new wave of speculation within the Overwatch community.
So far, player feedback on Mauga in Overwatch 2 has been overwhelmingly positive. This is notable as reactions to new heroes are usually mixed due to the competitive nature of the game. Blizzard can consider this as a success. From November 3 to November 5, players who haven't had a chance to try out the new hero can jump into the game and play as Mauga.
Given the current state of tank heroes in Overwatch 2, the introduction of Mauga and the mystery character will undoubtedly bring a revitalizing element to this role. While Mauga is set to make his debut in Season 8, players will have to exercise patience until at least Season 14 to experience the other tank hero hinted at during BlizzCon 2023.

As an avid fan of Overwatch, I am thrilled about the potential addition of a new tank hero to the roster. The game has been in dire need of more tanks for a while now, and the developers seem to have heard our pleas. The mysterious character teased at BlizzCon 2023 has sparked a lot of speculation within the community, and I can't wait to see what Blizzard has in store for us.
The current tank heroes in Overwatch 2 have been feeling a bit lackluster, so I'm hoping that the new character will bring some much-needed excitement to the role. I'm also curious to see how the developers will balance the new hero with the existing ones. It's a challenging task, but I'm confident that Blizzard can pull it off.
Overall, I'm very excited about the future of Overwatch 2. The new heroes, maps, and game modes have me eager to jump back into the game. I can't wait to see what Blizzard has in store for us in the coming seasons.
