While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has received widespread acclaim, some fans have taken to social media to express their opinions on Cosmo the Spacedog's gender. Director James Gunn has responded to these comments, unsurprisingly.
In the film, Cosmo the Spacedog is a supporting character who shines as brightly as the main stars. Cosmo has been a part of the MCU since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and was inspired by the Soviet dog Laika, who was sent into space in 1957. Cosmo possesses telekinetic and telepathic abilities and arrived in Knowhere after being sent into space as a test subject in the 1960s. While the character was portrayed as male in the comics, Cosmo is depicted as a female dog in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, with the voice of Maria Bakalova.
Some Marvel fans have expressed their discontent with a recent change made by director James Gunn. After sharing a behind-the-scenes photo of the actors who voiced several characters in the film, including Cosmo, a fan asked why the character had been made female when it was originally a male dog in the comics. Gunn explained that Cosmo was based on a real-life Russian dog named Laika, who was female, so he chose to gender-swap the character back. However, some fans were not satisfied with this explanation and questioned why the change was necessary. Gunn defended his decision by pointing out that other characters in the film had also been altered from their comic counterparts. Despite some backlash, most fans seem to support Gunn's creative choices.
The MCU's version of Cosmo may be a different gender, but she possesses the same powers as her comic book counterpart. Cosmo has already showcased her impressive combat skills and telekinesis abilities by facing off against formidable foes like Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the movie's mid-credits scene, it is revealed that Cosmo joins Rocket's new group of Guardians, solidifying her place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite some fans' reservations, it appears that Bakalova's portrayal of Cosmo is here to stay. Don't miss Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, now playing in theaters.
