Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman are set to star together in the new Netflix romantic comedy A Family Affair. Efron, 36, plays a confident movie star named Chris Cole who falls for the mother of his assistant, portrayed by Kidman, 56. This is not the first time the two actors have played love interests on-screen, as they previously starred together in The Paperboy in 2012 and The Butler in 2013.
In the opening seconds of the trailer, we see Zara (played by Joey King) walking in on Chris and her mother. As she quickly leaves the room, she accidentally hits her head on a door frame. Chris checks in on her, asking about his Teen Choice Award-winning film, but Zara responds by giving him the finger.
"Don't worry, I think she's okay," Chris remarks.

In the two-minute trailer, Zara talks to her friends, grandmother, and mother about the awkward but funny relationship between her mother and boss.
She tells her mom, "I've been his assistant for two years, I know him really well. He's self-absorbed and selfish."
On the other end, however, Kidman has her own mother (Kathy Bates) in her ear, calling Chris “BuzzFeed’s Hunkiest Brunette.”

Zara tries to get Chris to stop by telling him that the inappropriate relationship with her mother is finished. But as they struggle to part ways in a car, she shouts at them, "You're not Jack and Rose!" Over the phone, she declares, "He's going to harm her, and I might have to take action against him."
Efron couldn't resist the opportunity to work with Kidman again on screen. He shared with People that despite some initial nerves, reuniting with Nicole is always a fantastic experience. He praised her not only for her talent as an actress but also for her kindness, warmth, and enjoyable company. Efron also mentioned that the chemistry between him and Kidman is effortless, genuine, and enjoyable.
Director Richard LaGravenese expressed his excitement about the dynamic between Joey and Zac's characters in the movie, highlighting the fun they bring to their roles. He also mentioned his appreciation for the role reversal between the mother and daughter, where the daughter takes on a disapproving and suspicious parental role while the mother embarks on a secret love affair, feeling rejuvenated.
Originally set to be released in November 2023, A Family Affair had to be postponed due to strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. Fans can now look forward to watching it on Netflix starting June 28.
