The ongoing debate between streaming platform Twitch and streamer xQc, and YouTube content creator and podcaster Ethan Klein from h3h3, regarding reaction video content and fair use, has taken a new twist. Klein has decided to publicly share private messages (DMs) between the two on Twitter. Recently, xQc and Klein engaged in a debate on YouTube about this topic. However, the debate ended without reaching a mutual agreement or showing much respect towards each other. The leaked DMs further indicate that their relationship is far from amicable.
In recent times, xQc and many other streamers have faced significant criticism regarding their reaction content on Twitch, Kick, and YouTube. The criticism is centered around the observation that a considerable portion of xQc's and other streamers' reaction video content does not include their actual reactions. Consequently, some individuals have gone as far as accusing xQc and others of appropriating content for their own gain. Klein, specifically, labeled xQc as a "content thief," leading xQc to challenge Klein to a live debate.
After the inconclusive debate, Klein decided to publicly share the ongoing discussion between himself and xQc through Twitter DMs. The leaked DMs began with xQc expressing his dissatisfaction, stating that Klein's exclusion and tweets on unprepared topics showed a lack of maturity. The insults continued as xQc referred to Eithan as an "old guy" and a "boring, grayhair andy," while Klein made light of xQc's lack of sleep and his way of "coping" with criticism. This back-and-forth exchange lasted until approximately 2:30 AM on Tuesday.
However, their conversation over Twitter DMs went beyond mere insults. It centered on the very topic they had debated. xQc argued that Klein was searching for nonexistent victims and claimed that he had no personal interest in profiting from reaction videos, as the funds primarily went towards paying editors and the team. On the other hand, Klein contended that the revenue mattered to the creators whose videos xQc watched, as they did not receive any compensation for his usage. While xQc might not prioritize money, others may.
xQc has faced previous accusations of being unconcerned with the impact his content has on others. Despite admitting that his gambling streams were harmful, he resumed gambling for profit. In contrast, Ethan Klein has actively defended the fair use of YouTube videos for reaction videos, even though he currently criticizes xQc's actions.
In response to Klein leaking their private messages, xQc retaliated by sending more messages, which were also leaked. He mocks Klein for the expenses incurred through his lawsuits over fair use, suggesting that Klein is bitter about it. xQc further taunts Klein by mentioning that he leaked the DMs out of insecurity, and sends a photo of his expensive watch, insinuating his wealth. In reply, Klein responds with a series of smiling emojis. It is likely that the contentious debate between these Twitch and YouTube creators will continue in the future.
