Timothy Olyphant recently discussed his decision to pass on the opportunity to play Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise. Despite his successful acting career in films like Scream 2, Hitman and TV shows such as Justified, Deadwood, Santa Clarita Diet, and The Mandalorian, Olyphant reflects on his decision not to take on the iconic role. Instead, the role went to Vin Diesel, who has portrayed Dominic Toretto in ten movies, with two more on the way.
During an episode of Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Olyphant discussed the roles he rejected or did not get cast in, including Fast & Furious. When asked if he thinks the franchise would have been as successful if he had accepted the role, Olyphant expressed his belief that it wouldn't have been. Check out Olyphant's full response below:
I am inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt that they would not do that. Although I haven't watched those movies, I am familiar with their cultural significance. One thing is for sure, [Vin Diesel] is like no other, he stands out in a unique way... I recall thinking, "This doesn't seem like a good fit for me," at the time. However, he appears to be the perfect choice. But hey, the same thing crossed my mind when I was working on Hitman and I was still getting paid, so who knows?
What Did Timothy Olyphant Do After Rejecting Fast & Furious?
Although Olyphant won't be playing Dom in the Fast Saga, he has achieved considerable success throughout his career. After turning down the role, Olyphant went on to portray the lethal assassin Agent 47 in the 2007 film adaptation of IO Interactive's popular stealth video game franchise, Hitman. He has also delved into various genres, including action and horror, starring in notable titles such as Live Free and Die Hard, A Perfect Getaway, and The Crazies. Nevertheless, it could be argued that Olyphant's most iconic characters have emerged from his work in television.
Olyphant has had a diverse career, starring in both leading and supporting roles in acclaimed TV series. He has portrayed tough law enforcement characters such as Sheriff Seth Bullock in Deadwood, Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified, and Marshal Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian. In addition, he has showcased his comedic talent by playing a fictionalized version of himself in later seasons of The Good Place. Since turning down the opportunity to join the Fast & Furious franchise, Olyphant has continued to have a successful and varied career. While Olyphant could have had success as Dominic Toretto, it is clear that he has no regrets about his decision, as he has gone on to lead numerous productions.
