Exclusive Insider Leak: Destiny 2 Season 23 Drops Legendary Shards – What's Next?

Destiny 2 bids farewell to Legendary Shards in Season 23, ushering in new costs and exciting dismantle rewards Embrace the changes ahead!

Starting from Season 23, Bungie plans to phase out Legendary Shards, which have long been a crucial resource in Destiny 2. These shards are typically earned through activities or by dismantling high-tier gear. They have been the preferred currency for dealing with Xur, acquiring engrams, and unlocking exclusive Exotics. By the time The Final Shape expansion launches in February 2024, Legendary Shards will be completely retired.

Bungie states that Legendary Shards have been creating instability in the Destiny 2 economy for an extended period. Removing them will simplify the game for new players and reduce the abundance of various currencies, consumables, and items. Starting in Season 23, the Monument to Lost Lights will no longer require Legendary Shards for any transactions, while costs involving Glimmer, Exotic Cipher, and Spoils of Conquest will remain unchanged.

The costs of Legendary Shards will be completely removed for ritual gear focusing. Non-Adept focusing will now only require ritual engrams and Glimmer as costs. However, focusing Adept weapons will still necessitate achieving seven wins in Trials Passages or acquiring Nightfall Ciphers.

Once The Final Shape is launched, all sources and costs of Legendary Shards in the game will be completely removed. Bungie will not provide an exchange of stockpiled Legendary Shards for any other currency. However, there will be no increase in Glimmer prices for items or the addition of replacement costs for items that previously required Legendary Shards.

Regarding dismantling gear, Bungie intends to provide players with valuable rewards, such as Glimmer, Enhancement Core, and reputation rewards. The removal of costs for retrieving Ships and Sparrows from Collections means that there will be no need for rewards when these items are dismantled.

In a recent update, Bungie has hinted that there will be changes to Xur's payment options. Presently, players are required to use both Glimmer and Legendary Shards to obtain Exotic and Legendary-class gear from the Agent of the Nine. However, in the future, Xur will start accepting "alternative" forms of payment once Legendary Shards are phased out of Destiny 2.
