Just like on TV, the cast of House of the Dragon is picking sides in the battle between Team Black and Team Green.

In the Game of Thrones spinoff Season 1, the fictional land of Westeros is in turmoil as they argue over who should rightfully sit on the Iron Throne - King Aegon II Targaryen or Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The Greens support Aegon, adopting the colors of House Hightower’s flag, while the Blacks stand behind Rhaenyra, represented by the traditional Targaryen colors.

As a reminder, the late King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) had previously named Rhaenyra as his heir before having children with Rhaenyra's former friend, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). On his deathbed, Alicent believed Viserys had chosen Aegon as his heir. However, viewers know that Viserys actually mentioned Aegon's name in reference to King Aegon the Conqueror's Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, which he had shared with Rhaenyra.

Although Aegon II ended season 1 as the crowned king, Glynn-Carney, 29, is not necessarily supporting his character in the upcoming season.

"I'm a feminist, so I would love to see a woman in power. At the House of the Dragon season 2 premiere in New York City, I expressed my preference for the Blacks," the actor shared exclusively with We at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Monday, June 3. However, he clarified that the current focus is on playing against Black.

On the other hand, Ewan Mitchell, who plays Prince Aemond Targaryen, remains loyal to his character's Team Green. When asked about his allegiance, he playfully teased, "I won't give it away," before revealing, "I am Team Green all the way."

Mitchell's character escalated the conflict between the two sides when he and his dragon, Vhagar, accidentally killed Rhaenyra's son Prince Lucerys Velaryon in the season 1 finale. The 27-year-old actor teased that Mitchell is faced with a choice after the incident - he can either return home and admit it was unintentional, or he can claim the kill and become the most wanted man in the realm.

Phia Saban, who portrays Aegon's wife and sister, Queen Helaena Targaryen, is also part of Team Green on and off the small screen. The 25-year-old actress mentioned that she spends so much time with Team Green that she feels brainwashed and finds it hard to see outside of that perspective. She struggles to align with the pro-Blacks propaganda she hears, as she views the show through her character's lens.

Harry Collett, who portrays Rhaenyra’s eldest son, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, shared with Us that although he sometimes feels sorry for the Greens, he and his character are firmly supporting his onscreen mother. He humorously expressed curiosity about what Team Green supporters think when they argue for the Greens to claim the throne.

Steve Toussaint, the actor playing Lord Corlys Velaryon, also aligns with his character's allegiance to Team Black. He believes that Rhaenyra has the stronger claim to the throne because the king had declared her as his heir, and all the lords had sworn allegiance to her. He emphasized that this is the law and even if he was just a viewer, he would still agree with Rhaenyra's rightful claim.

Other Team Black supporters at the NYC red carpet event included Bethany Antonia (Lady Baela Targaryen) and Jamie Kenna (Ser Alfred Broome).

Antonia expressed, "This situation arose due to a misunderstanding or a confused argument. However, loyalties were pledged long ago, and she was always meant to be the rightful heir to the throne. I believe we just veered off course a bit, and now we find ourselves divided into Greens and Blacks."

Kenna added, "It is Rhaenyra's rightful claim to the throne. She has been designated as the ruler. That is the reality of the situation."

House of the Dragon season 2 premieres on HBO and Max Sunday, June 16, at 9 p.m. ET.

Editor's P/S:

The cast of "House of the Dragon" is divided in their support for Team Black or Team Green, mirroring the conflict within the show. While some actors, like Tom Glynn-Carney, express a preference for the feminist ideals represented by Team Black, others, such as Ewan Mitchell, remain loyal to their characters' Team Green affiliations. Phia Saban's immersion in her character's perspective has influenced her off-screen views, while Harry Collett and Steve Toussaint firmly support Team Black due to Rhaenyra's rightful claim to the throne. The upcoming season promises to further explore this division as the battle for the Iron Throne intensifies.

Additionally, the article highlights the complex nature of the conflict, with characters grappling with divided loyalties and the consequences of their actions. Mitchell's character faces a difficult choice after accidentally killing Rhaenyra's son, while Antonia and Kenna emphasize the importance of upholding sworn oaths and the rightful claim to the throne. The show's exploration of these themes adds depth to the character dynamics and sets the stage for a gripping and unpredictable second season.
