Exclusive: Elysium 2 Director Reveals Surprising Plans 10 Years After Groundbreaking Matt Damon Sci-Fi

Director plans for Elysium 2, a sequel to the original Matt Damon sci-fi film, have emerged after a decade Promising a new adventure within the same captivating universe, the anticipated movie is set to captivate audiences once again

Summary

"Elysium" director Neill Blomkamp wants to make a sequel to the 2013 film because it is becoming more relevant over time.

The potential sequel will take place on both Earth and the space station Elysium.

The Elysium movie would be less of a sequel and more of a new story set in the same world.

Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has expressed his interest in creating a sequel to the original movie. Released in 2013 and starring Matt Damon, Elysium was Blomkamp's second film following the success of his debut feature District 9 in 2009. The story of Elysium is set in a deteriorating Earth, where the wealthy reside on a space station named Elysium, while the protagonist, Max Da Costa, portrayed by Damon, fights for equality.

Blomkamp recently discussed his upcoming project, the Gran Turismo movie, in an interview with TheWrap. During their conversation, he mentioned his desire to continue the Elysium story, as he believes it is becoming increasingly relevant with time. Blomkamp envisions the sequel as another film in the same universe, featuring events that unfold both on Earth and Elysium. Please see the full quote below:

"It is becoming more and more relevant as time goes on. I would love to go back to that world and do something in it again. Whether it's Elysium or whether it's another movie in that world, I don't know. I would want to go back and visit it. I'm not sure when that would be, but yeah, I want to go back."

Could Elysium 2 Happen?

I am a big fan of both Elysium and Chappie. In fact, I have been contemplating the idea of creating a sequel to Elysium. The reason behind my inclination is that Elysium seems to be growing increasingly pertinent with the passage of time. Although it may not be a direct continuation of the story, I would definitely be interested in exploring another narrative set in the same world as Elysium.

Making another film set in the world of Elysium may not be feasible for Blomkamp, considering his history of encountering obstacles when it comes to bringing his projects to fruition, particularly in terms of sequels or franchises. A prominent example of this is his abandoned Alien 5, a highly anticipated project that was teased for a long time but ultimately never materialized.

Blomkamp's other films, including District 9, have not received any sequels. Despite the director's desire to create a sequel for District 9, there hasn't been any progress. While there is a possibility of a District 10 sequel, it is less likely that a sequel to Elysium would be approved.

Although Elysium earned more money at the box office compared to District 9 ($280 million versus $210 million), it also had a much higher production cost. With a budget of $115 million, Elysium only made an estimated net profit of $18 million. While still profitable, studios would perceive a District 9 sequel as a safer investment. As long as the struggle to make a District 9 sequel continues, it is unlikely that a new Elysium film would attract more interest from studios.
