Netflix announced today, October 12, that the official live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho will be globally available on Thursday, December 14. The series is expected to premiere at 12 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, following Netflix's usual release schedule. Additionally, there will be a special screening event on the evening of Wednesday, December 13 for invited guests, with further details to be announced later.
Takumi Kitamura has been chosen to play the protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi, in the series. Directing the adaptation is Sho Tsukikawa, while Tatsuro Mishima takes charge of the scriptwriting. Ryo Sakaguchi serves as the VFX supervisor. This series marks the first production resulting from Netflix's multi-year contract with TOHO Studios, which allows them to lease two stage facilities in Tokyo. The contract, initiated in April 2021, is a significant achievement for both companies.
The Togashi's original manga series made its debut in 1990 in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, running until 1994. Viz Media took on the task of translating and publishing the manga in English, releasing all 19 compilation volumes in print through their Shonen Jump magazine in 2002.
It's important to note that the forthcoming live-action series will be based on the original manga, not the anime adaptation.
The series' iconic television anime adaptation, produced by Studio Pierrot, captivated audiences worldwide from 1992 to 1994. Alongside this renowned adaptation, there were two mesmerizing films and two original video anime (OVA) releases.
In North America, Funimation distributed the anime series and the two OVAs on home video, with Media Blasters releasing the first film. The second film, on the other hand, found its release in the region through Central Park Media.
