The couple has chosen to keep their personal lives private. Mendes shared this decision after an Instagram user criticized Gosling for not being visible with their children in public.

In April 2020, the Lost River star explained why she doesn't talk about Ryan and his role as a father. She mentioned that she prefers to keep that part of her life private. She wants to share what she feels comfortable with but doesn't want to involve Ryan or her kids too much. It's not about being secretive or strange, but more about maintaining privacy in a public setting. She hopes this explanation makes sense, as it is her honest response.
