WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Final Fantasy 16. Proceed with caution.
The Final Fantasy series has always been renowned for its captivating roster of formidable villains. In Final Fantasy 16, we are introduced to Emperor Sylvestre Lesage, a character that perfectly embodies the franchise's tradition of iconic and deceitful dictators. With an insatiable thirst for power, he cruelly controls his subjects and stops at nothing to accumulate wealth, placing him in the same league as other memorable antagonists such as President Shinra from Final Fantasy 7.
Many of the parallels between the two villains extend beyond superficial similarities, as both Emperor Sylvestre and President Shinra share a deep-rooted obsession with power and exhibit ruthless tendencies. These antagonists serve as formidable obstacles for the characters to overcome throughout their journey, while the looming presence of the true threat in Final Fantasy 16 adds an ever-present sense of danger.
Final Fantasy 7 and 16's Approach to Tyrants
When it comes to creating memorable villains such as Emperor Sylvestre and President Shinra, the initial introduction of these characters plays a crucial role. It is essential to showcase the extent of their malevolence especially if they ultimately display no remorse for mercilessly slaughtering innocent civilians. By doing so, it establishes a strong motivation for protagonists like Clive in Final Fantasy 16, compelling them to pursue and eliminate these villains. Additionally, this sets the stage for the villain to potentially commit an abhorrent atrocity in the near future.
President Shinra's introduction in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake has undergone some changes from the original. However, both versions portray him as someone consumed by wealth and control. The crucial scenes that showcase President Shinra's character occur in the boardroom at Shinra HQ. There, he dominates every conversation, suggesting extreme measures to combat Avalanche. Additionally, President Shinra's encounter with the protagonists demonstrates his vast resources and ability to gather information. He ensnares Cloud and his team in a trap following the destruction of a second Mako Reactor.
In contrast, Emperor Sylvestre takes longer to appear on Clive's list of targets in Final Fantasy 16. The character is first introduced during a meeting with other advisors to the Empire of Sanbreque. Displaying his disruptive nature, the emperor sits apart from the rest in an elevated seat, undermining the purpose of a roundtable discussion. Moreover, during the ongoing conversation, Sylvestre impulsively decides to violate a longstanding treaty and commit a war crime against a neutral country, Valisthea.
How Early Game Villains Leave a Mark in Final Fantasy Games
President Shinra's demise in the original Final Fantasy 7 can hardly be described as anything less than abrupt, occurring shortly after departure from the initial area of Midgar. While some may argue that this concludes the character's influence around the first third of the game, it is more accurately considered as the opening chapter of a much grander narrative. Consequently, President Shinra will not be present in the subsequent installments of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, but his impact on the story thus far ensures that he will not be forgotten.
Similarly, Emperor Sylvestre in Final Fantasy 16 manages to survive to a relatively advanced stage in the game, even if he does not hold the primary antagonist role. Nevertheless, it would be remiss to dismiss Sylvestre's presence entirely by the game's conclusion, as his reckless actions and warmongering leave a profound mark on the world. Although he may not be the central villain, he remains a noteworthy antagonist who may rival some of the most despised enemies in the Final Fantasy franchise.
Final Fantasy 16 is available now for PS5.
