Elon Musk expressed agreement with an antisemitic post on his social media platform X, endorsing the assertion that Jewish communities promote "hatred against Whites."
On Wednesday afternoon, a post on X stated: "Jewish communities have been actively promoting the same kind of divisive hatred against the white population that they themselves condemn." The post also propagated an antisemitic conspiracy theory, mentioning an influx of "hordes of minorities" into Western nations.
Musk responded by acknowledging, "You have spoken the absolute truth." This abhorrent conspiracy theory, characterized by its antisemitic nature, purports that Jews aim to diminish the White majority in Western countries by facilitating the influx of undocumented minority populations. Online hate groups have endorsed this theory, which found echoes in the actions of Robert Bowers, the perpetrator behind the tragic mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. This horrific incident stands as the most lethal assault on the Jewish community in the history of the United States.
Musk later clarified that he does not believe all Jewish communities are subject to hatred, but he criticized the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for unfairly targeting the majority of the West, despite their support for Jewish people and Israel. He argued that the ADL refrains from criticizing minority groups who pose a significant threat, as dictated by their own principles.
The intention of Musk's statement remains ambiguous. According to the ADL, instances of antisemitism in the United States reached a record high in 2022. While the ADL stated that the rise in antisemitism cannot be attributed to a single group, their findings revealed that coordinated antisemitic activities by White supremacist groups doubled in the past year, as reported in a March audit.
Musk expressed his belief that the ADL fosters racism towards White individuals. "I find the messaging of ADL and other similar groups promoting anti-white racism or anti-Asian racism, or any form of racism, deeply offensive," he stated. Expressing his frustration, Musk urged the ADL to cease these actions.
X and the ADL did not respond promptly to comment requests.
The ADL has been openly critical of X, especially since Musk assumed control of the platform more than a year ago. Over the past year, the ADL, the Center for Countering Digital Hate, and comparable organizations have observed a significant increase in hate speech on X, a trend that Musk has either criticized or refuted.
Musk issued a threat to sue the ADL in September, accusing the organization of defaming him and causing a decline in advertising sales on X. In a recent statement, the ADL refuted these claims, asserting that any suggestion of orchestrating a boycott or being responsible for significant financial losses to the company is untrue.
The CEO of the ADL, Jonathan Greenblatt, stated that Musk's remarks about the organization have only escalated a campaign of antisemitic hate directed at them.
In early October, after pausing its advertising campaign on X, the ADL said it would resume its ads on the platform "to bring our important message on fighting hate to X and its users."
