In Shiro Games' Dune: Spice Wars, players take command of their chosen faction as they vie for control over territory and resources on the desolate desert planet of Arrakis. To achieve victory, players must effectively manage their settlements and armies, handle diplomatic matters and espionage, and scavenge for and gather various resources. The most coveted resource of all is Spice, a mind-altering substance indigenous to Arrakis, which is so highly prized that warring Houses wage battles to claim it.
To obtain Spice, players must first locate its source, build Refineries, and then deploy Harvesters to harvest the precious resource. Along the way, unexpected obstacles such as enemy raids, electric storms, and colossal Sandworms will attempt to hinder progress. However, each faction possesses their own strategies to tackle these challenges. Spice is not only crucial for paying Imperial Tax, but any excess can be sold to the CHOAM for Solari. Players can regulate the amount of Spice sold using a slider located in the top-left corner of the screen. However, before engaging in trade, players must first establish a sufficient supply. Here is a breakdown of how players can acquire Spice.
Refineries
Players must prioritize the acquisition of Spice, alongside Water and Solari, in order to succeed in Dune: Spice Wars. Initially, they must use Ornithopters to search for Spice Fields. Once a field is found, players can choose to either forcefully Annex the region by deploying soldiers or peacefully annex it if they belong to the Atreides faction.
After successfully annexing a territory with a Spice Field, players can proceed to construct a Refinery in that area. Once the Refinery is completed, players can deploy a Harvester to gather Spice from the field. The process of Spice extraction and refinement is automatic, eliminating the need for the Harvester to make periodic trips back to the Refinery. It is crucial to protect the Refinery building, as damage to it would prevent the Harvester from processing Spice and provide no refuge for extraction.
Harvesters
Refineries operate in conjunction with specific Harvesters. Harvesters are responsible for extracting Spice from nearby Spice Fields, which is then processed at the Refinery. To initiate their work, Harvester deployment needs to be manually triggered. After selecting the Deploy button, a carrier will collect the Harvester and transport it to the designated Spice Field. To ensure the Harvester's safety during attacks or adverse weather conditions, players can activate the Auto-Recall feature.
Additionally, players have the option to enhance Harvesting efficiency by adding Crews and Ornicopters to the Harvesters. Crews provide a 15% Harvesting bonus, while Ornicopters contribute a 5% bonus and also assist in locating Sandworms. In the absence of the Auto-Recall feature, if a Sandworm attack occurs, players will have to manually recall the Harvester to the Refinery. This can be a costly procedure, as replacing Harvesters is expensive. Therefore, it is highly recommended to ensure that the Auto-Recall feature is enabled. In areas with contested territory near Spice Fields, having Military Units on standby can be advantageous for enhanced protection against enemy assaults on the Harvester.
