Highlights

Dune: Spice Wars is a captivating game that draws inspiration from Frank Herbert's renowned book series. It provides players with an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in the conflicts between various factions as they compete for dominance over the valuable spice on the planet Arrakis.

The game includes factions such as House Corrino, House Atreides, The Smugglers, and House Harkonnen, each with their own distinct playstyles, strengths, and weaknesses.

Players have the opportunity to engage in various game modes, commanding formidable military units, employing diplomacy, espionage, and other strategic tactics to establish dominance and secure resources on the desert planet.

Based on the Frank Herbert book series, Dune: Spice Wars transports players to the fictional planet of Arrakis, an arid desert where a prized natural psychedelic spice is abundant. Dominated by powerful factions, this valuable resource becomes the focus of a bitter struggle, causing great suffering for the indigenous Fremen people. While the novels primarily revolve around House Atreides and their conflict with House Harkonnen, Dune: Spice Wars allows players to explore multiple factions, with more to be added upon the game's release from Early Access in September.

The factions playable in the game depend on the selected game mode. The Conquest mode exclusively allows players to control the major houses - Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corrino. However, the Battle For Arrakis and Kanly Duel game modes grant players the additional opportunity to command The Fremen or The Smugglers.

5 House Corrino

House Corrino is a challenging faction to play in the game due to its unique playstyle that emphasizes focused development rather than expansive conquest. Players will face significant penalties for expansion and annexation of new territories. However, House Corrino excels in maintaining and prospering their controlled territories.

With their strong position and influence within the galactic Empire, House Corrino can strategically utilize the Imperial Edict on Lansraad Resolutions to alter their approach. Additionally, they possess the ability to construct an extra building in each settlement, leading to higher rates of resource production. The formidable Sardaukar military units, known for their legendary status, are among the most powerful in the game. However, their production can be costly when aiming to assemble large numbers of troops.

4 The Smugglers

The Smugglers, a criminal organization based on Arrakis, specialize in mercantilism and subterfuge. They have a skilled network of spies and strategic counselors, excelling in the art of infiltration. Understanding their unique playing style can be challenging at first.

By constructing an Underworld Headquarters in enemy settlements, The Smugglers not only deplete resources from rival factions but also set clever traps to facilitate easier annexation. One exceptional advantage of this faction is their ability to annex territories regardless of their distance from Sietch Tuek. This allows The Smugglers to adopt a more disjointed approach and prioritize annexing territories based on available resources rather than location.

3 House Atreides

House Atreides is a dominant faction that focuses on diplomacy and possesses exceptional councilors and military units. Their strength lies in their influence within the Council, enabling them to vote on reforms that benefit all factions.

The Peaceful Annexation faction ability is another valuable asset, although the process of annexing new territories may be time-consuming. Moreover, if other factions break a treaty with House Atreides, they will endure a substantial decline of 100% Landsraad standing, positioning House Atreides favorably in the political sphere. Additionally, when House Atreides reaches 5k Hegemony, they will enjoy a 10% increase in Solari production when a positive Resolution is in effect, and a 10% enhancement in Military Unit Power when a negative Resolution is active. As a predominantly peaceful culture, the Atreides refrain from pillaging neutral villages.

2 The Fremen

The Fremen, who are the native inhabitants of Arrakis, have a better advantage in navigating the hostile environment compared to other groups. With their ability to perform Wormriding and gather Spice using mobile teams rather than Harvesters, there are numerous unique benefits associated with playing as this faction. For instance, the melee Warriors are the primary unit type and are considered some of the most formidable troops in the game.

Furthermore, the Fremen councilor named Otheym is one of the most powerful military leaders in the game. He provides a 10% Speed bonus to all units, as well as a +25% Power boost and a -25% reduction in Damage Received. When the Fremen reach 5k Hegemony, they unlock the ability to control Deep Deserts by surrounding them, and they can also generate Thumpers to attract Sandworms. These Sandworms can be utilized for teleportation-like travel. The only limitation for the Fremen is their -1 Building Slot restriction, but this is easily compensated for by the other strengths possessed by this faction.

1 House Harkonnen

The Harkonnens, a highly respected militaristic group, assert their dominance over other factions through expansionism and oppression. In addition to their powerful armies, they possess several valuable buildings that aid in maintaining territories and producing resources.

The Harkonnens enjoy certain faction bonuses, such as receiving extra intelligence when raiding neutral villages. They also benefit from a 5% increase in resource production from villages for each active militia unit. While their prowess lies in infiltration, boasting formidable agents and councilors, their influence within the Lansraad council is relatively limited compared to other factions. However, their military superiority and efficient building production enable a fast and aggressive playing style, ideal for those who want to capitalize on the faction's strengths.
