Doja Cat has faced numerous controversies since the release of her debut EP, Purr!, in 2014.

In July 2023, Doja faced criticism from her fans when she expressed disdain for their unofficial nickname, "Kittenz." In a now-deleted post on Threads, she stated, "My fans shouldn't label themselves like that. If you refer to yourself as a 'kitten' or 'kittenz,' it implies that you should prioritize getting a job and assisting your parents with household duties instead of spending excessive time on your phone."

Doja responded to another fan's request to express her love for her fans, despite her dislike for the nickname she had given them during her teenage years when she identified as an "alcoholic teen." However, this response was in a since-deleted post. The user had asked her to affirm her love for her fans by saying, "I do love you guys," as she usually does. Doja replied by stating that she doesn't say it because she doesn't even know her fans.

Chat Rooms Scandal

Doja faced criticism from fans in May 2020 for using a derogatory term in one of her old songs, which refers to Black victims of police brutality. Furthermore, there was viral footage suggesting her involvement in online chat rooms affiliated with racist and alt-right groups. Consequently, the hashtag #DojaCatIsOverParty gained popularity on social media.

She addressed the controversy through a now-deleted Instagram post, expressing, "Since I was a child, I have used public chat rooms to socialize. Although I should not have been on some of those chat room websites, I want to clarify that I have never engaged in any racist discussions. I deeply apologize to all those whom I have offended."

Doja further emphasized her identity as a proud black woman, mentioning that half of her family hails from South Africa. In an Instagram Live video, she addressed the scandal and admitted to being heavily intoxicated during her online chat room video. Doja also expressed remorse for the controversial title of her song, clarifying that it was based solely on her own personal experiences. She acknowledged that attempting to redefine the term was misguided and acknowledged it as a poor decision to include it in her music.

Noah Schnapp Feud

Doja engaged in an online dispute with the Stranger Things actor when he made their private messages public, where they had discussed her attraction to his Netflix co-star, Joseph Quinn. Observing that young individuals often say and do foolish things, in a live Instagram session in July 2022, Doja described Schnapp's behavior as deceitful, stating, "It's almost like he betrayed me. That's like being sneaky and conniving." She went on to say, "I'm not implying that is his entire personality. I don't think he is. Perhaps he is completely treacherous. However, I didn't perceive him that way. I assumed he would handle it calmly, but instead, he shared information that made me uncomfortable."

Schnapp later confirmed that there was no animosity between him and Doja. "Everything is fine," he stated on TikTok. Despite their reconciliation, Doja experienced a significant decrease in Instagram followers during the controversy. Her follower count decreased from 24.34 million to 24.14 million, as reported by We.

J Cyrus Relationship

In November 2022, Doja was initially linked romantically with comedian J Cyrus. However, her fans expressed disapproval towards their new relationship due to Cyrus' previous controversies, including accusations of exploiting his female Twitch fans.

In December 2020, Cyrus issued what appeared to be an apology for his previous actions through a lengthy social media post, which has since been deleted. In the captured screenshot shared by a Twitter user in June 2023, he expressed remorse, acknowledging his past carelessness, greed, ignorance, and disrespect.

Cyrus further confessed his involvement in engaging with others in flirtatious and provocative personal messages. He admitted that these individuals didn't simply view him as a casual acquaintance, but instead as someone they had grown to love and trust within a community where they felt safe and protected. Despite being an adult and possessing enough intelligence to know better, he admitted lacking the strength and respect necessary to improve himself. He admitted that regardless of his loneliness or the desperation for attention, he fully acknowledged that his actions were incorrect.

After a fan account on Instagram shared Cyrus' allegations, Doja came forward to respond to criticism of her relationship. In a now-deleted Instagram comment, she expressed her feelings, stating, "I urge all of you to read this comment and take it to heart. I couldn't care less about what you think of my personal life. It has never mattered to me and it never will. So, goodbye and good riddance to any opinions you have about me or my personal life." (

Drama-Filled Fan Interactions

In July 2023, several posts were deleted on the Threads platform, and within them, Doja addressed a fan who had chosen to use her actual name, Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, as their account username. In response, she expressed her discomfort, stating, "It's incredibly creepy that you've made my government name your screen name."

In addition to criticizing her fan base's nickname and expressing that she does not love them due to not knowing them, more fans swiftly responded to the Grammy winner. Another user on Threads stated, "And we are not familiar with you either. However, we have consistently supported you through both good times and bad. Keep in mind that without us, you would be nothing."

When the user suggested that without fans' support, Doja would be working at a grocery store, Doja reprimanded the fan for "speaking to me as if you are my mother." As a consequence of the fallout from the interactions on Threads, several of the singer's top fan accounts decided to deactivate their social media pages.
