Hayley Atwell, star of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, has openly discussed her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. In Multiverse of Madness, there is an extensive scene where Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) ventures into an alternate reality and encounters the Illuminati, a group led by alternate versions of heroes such as Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Reed Richards (John Krasinski), and Captain Carter (Atwell). In this reality, Atwell's character Peggy Carter has been given the supersoldier serum instead of Captain America. However, this alternate reality is ultimately destroyed by a powerful Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).
During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Atwell talked about her Marvel role and her involvement in Mission: Impossible 7 (prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevents actors from participating in promotional activities for struck projects). In the conversation, Atwell shared her thoughts on Peggy's brief cameo in Doctor Strange 2, stating that it does not benefit the character of Peggy.
She was like, "I could do this all day," and then [gets] immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And, I’m like, "Oh, it doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”
Does Peggy Carter Have a Future in the MCU?
Peggy Carter's journey in the MCU is truly exceptional. From her introduction as a young woman in Captain America: The First Avenger to her later portrayal as an elderly version of herself in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, her character has undergone diverse transformations. Additionally, Peggy Carter has made appearances across various timelines and universes, including two seasons of the TV series Agent Carter, which delved into her collaboration with Howard Stark during the 1940s.
Atwell has appeared in various forms and with different characteristics, making it possible for her to reprise the role once again. However, recent statements from the actor suggest that there are currently no plans for her return. With the MCU moving forward, including a new version of Captain America portrayed by Anthony Mackie's Falcon, there may be limited opportunities for her to make further appearances, possibly only in minor roles like her cameo in Doctor Strange 2.
If Atwell's final appearance as the character is in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it may not be a completely satisfactory conclusion. However, this is just one alternate version of her character, as she is better represented by her role as Captain Carter (also known as Captain Britain) in the animated series What If, where she is again voiced by Atwell. Additionally, her character has an implied happy ending alongside Captain America in the main timeline of the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame.
