Doctor Strange 2 marked the return of Anson Mount as Black Bolt. However, there is uncertainty surrounding the character's future in the MCU.
In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, numerous characters made their way into the MCU, despite being outside of Disney's ownership or not part of the MCU canon. This included Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X from Fox's X-Men franchise, Anson Mount returning as Black Bolt from ABC's cancelled Inhumans TV series, Hayley Atwell as Captain Carter, and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, who became Captain Marvel in that particular universe. Additionally, the film introduced John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic, only for these characters to meet their demise at the hands of Wanda.
In an interview with Radio Times about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Mount was asked about his potential return to the MCU as Black Bolt. Mount responded, “If I were returning, I wouldn't be able to disclose it - but since I'm not, I can. I've had some informal conversations with the folks at Marvel, and it's an ongoing discussion. However, they currently have their own phase to focus on.” Mount further expressed, “I'm unsure at this point; time will tell. I would be thrilled to once again don the cowl and portray Black Bolt, as I have a deep admiration for the character."
Although Anson Mount expresses a desire to reprise his role as Black Bolt, there are currently no official plans to make that happen. Despite some informal discussions, it is unlikely that fans will get to see Mount as Black Bolt again anytime soon. Marvel Studios will likely focus on their current phase before considering bringing the character back. This news may be disappointing for fans of Black Bolt and The Inhumans, who have been anticipating a live-action adaptation. The character's appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a promising start, but unfortunately, Black Bolt met the same fate as The Inhumans TV series, which was canceled prematurely.
None of the upcoming MCU projects seem to provide a suitable opportunity for the Inhumans to make an appearance. The release of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in 2026, as part of phase 6 of the MCU, might be the first feasible chance for their inclusion. However, it is more probable that they will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. There is also an untitled Marvel Studios project scheduled for 2025, but it appears unlikely that it will involve The Inhumans. If Marvel Studios does eventually decide to bring back Anson Mount as Black Bolt, fans will have to exercise patience and wait for the opportunity.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available on Disney Plus.
