Doctor Strange 2 Star Opens Up About Unexpected Character Transformation

Doctor Strange 2 introduces thrilling cameos by MCU superheroes, but a talented actor expresses frustration over their character's storyline

The movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stayed true to its title by exploring various Marvel universes. However, one of the stars was unhappy with the portrayal of their character in the new version.

In this sequel, Doctor Strange encounters Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, who quickly transforms into a villain. Strange approaches Wanda for assistance in hiding America Chavez, only to realize that Wanda herself is the one pursuing the teenage universe-hopper. Wanda fully embraces her role as the Scarlet Witch and desires to exist in a universe where her children are alive. As a result, the characters embark on a chaotic journey through different timelines.

But even though fans got to see Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) portray Captain Marvel and John Krasinski as the first Mr. Fantastic in a long time, not everyone was pleased with how they were depicted on the screen. Hayley Atwell made a brief appearance as Captain Carter, only to have her shield bisect her. "When she said, 'I could do this all day,' and then immediately got cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience was like, 'She can't do it all day. Apparently you can't, so, egg on your face," Atwell revealed on Josh Horowitz's podcast, Happy Sad Confused. "That doesn't really do justice to Peggy."

After serving as Peggy Carter's caretaker in multiple movies, it was disappointing to see Atwell's character reduced to a romantic interest for Steve Rogers. Peggy, a spy by nature, had her own successful show that unfortunately only lasted for two brief seasons. She was a unique and intelligent female character in the Marvel universe, which is why her downfall in the underwhelming Phase Four MCU movie was so disheartening.

In a short scene in Doctor Strange 2, Peggy appeared alongside various Marvel characters, including Mr. Fantastic, Captain Marvel, Mordo, Black Bolt, and a version of Professor Xavier inspired by the X-Men: Animated Series. While this may have been intended as fan service, it came across as more of a desperate attempt to please fans. Many fans had been eagerly waiting to see a live-action Mr. Fantastic and the X-Men joining the MCU, but seeing them all being killed off was not what they had hoped for. Instead of witnessing John Krasinski taking on the role of Mr. Fantastic, fans were subjected to an unfortunate demise for the character.

Peggy's treatment was the greatest injustice. While Mount's portrayal of Black Bolt in the short-lived Inhumans series didn't have the same impact, Atwell has been a beloved part of the MCU for a decade. She shined as Captain Carter in Marvel Studios' What If…? and held her own in her self-titled series. Having her wield a shield and utter Captain America's iconic phrase, only to be dismissed, is the utmost disrespect. Peggy deserved better than a mere jetpack and five minutes of screen time.
