Despite their characters' deaths in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, one of the actors who portrayed an Illuminati member hints at the possibilities of their return in a future MCU release. In addition to developing the journeys of Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch in the MCU, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also utilized the opportunity to introduce and reintroduce some overlooked Marvel heroes known as the Earth-838 Illuminati. However, their appearance was short-lived, as Scarlet Witch mercilessly eliminated each one of them.
Nevertheless, the deaths of the Illuminati members do not necessarily rule out the potential return of different versions of these characters in the future, as indicated by Anson Mount, the actor portraying Black Bolt. During an interview with Radio Times, Mount was questioned about the possibility of reprising his role as Black Bolt in an upcoming Marvel project. While Mount neither confirms nor denies it, he does imply that the opportunity for another appearance in the MCU remains open. Read his response below:
I cannot confirm if the answer was yes, but since the answer is no, I can provide information. I have had informal discussions with the Marvel authorities, and although it is a topic of conversation, they are currently focused on their ongoing phase.
With numerous projects in progress and many actors returning to their previously left roles, it wouldn't be surprising to see Anson Mount and other Inhumans actors returning due to the existence of the multiverse. However, it is possible that newly introduced Avengers and other characters from the multiverse may have higher priority in the early stages of the Multiverse Saga. Nonetheless, there is a chance that Black Bolt and the Inhumans could make an appearance sooner rather than later.
Where Black Bolt Could Return In The MCU
Following Black Bolt's recent appearance, it is likely that he will be featured in upcoming MCU projects such as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. These films could potentially involve the Illuminati, the Inhumans, and other multiversal characters joining forces with the Avengers to fight against Kang. The precedent set by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which included an appearance by an MCU Inhuman, opens up the possibility of a full-scale crossover between the Inhumans and the Avengers in a grand event like Avengers: Secret Wars. However, it is unlikely that Loki season 2 and Deadpool 3 will include Black Bolt, as confirmed by Anson Mount's remarks about not filming new Marvel footage.
Although less probable, there is also a chance that the Inhumans already exist within the main universe of the MCU. Marvel Studios has made changes to Kamala Khan's origin and superpowers in Ms. Marvel, removing her connection to the Inhumans and instead linking her to the X-Men through her mutant genes. This suggests that the MCU may choose to avoid the Inhumans for the time being. However, if Marvel decides to revisit the Inhumans after the Multiverse Saga, they could potentially reveal that Anson Mount's Black Bolt and the Earth-616 Inhumans have been silently present all along, much like the Eternals.
Anson Mount's portrayal of Black Bolt in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness left a lasting impact. His upgraded suit and remarkable abilities overshadowed ABC's Inhumans, and his potential for future noteworthy appearances in the MCU remains untapped. While there may not be concrete plans for the Inhumans in the MCU, the boundless opportunities brought by the Multiverse Saga make a return of Black Bolt highly plausible within the next few years, rather than after Avengers: Secret Wars.
