Director Will Gluck Takes Responsibility for ‘Anyone But You’ Teaser: A Self-Admitted Overindulgence

Director Will Gluck humbly acknowledges his misstep with the initial teaser of 'Anyone But You', featuring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, attributing it to his own lapse A candid admission that promises an improved experience for audiences

Will Gluck, the director of the film Anyone But You, acknowledges the confusion caused by the initial teaser trailer and agrees with the audience's reaction. In an interview released on November 16, Gluck, aged 45, admitted to being overly playful with the clip.

"I take full responsibility," he admitted to Entertainment Weekly. "The teaser didn't go over well and I shoulder all the blame for that. We went too far in trying to be clever."

Gluck clarified, "The film is a delightful comedy, but if you watched that teaser without any context, you might wonder, 'Is someone going to die? Is this a suspenseful movie?' That was my mistake. I simply wanted to pique people's curiosity and make them ask, 'What's going on here?'"

The teaser showcases Sweeney's character, Bea, and Powell's character, Ben, coming to an agreement to pose as a couple during a destination wedding. Bea's parents are attempting to arrange a reunion with her ex-boyfriend, while Ben aims to make his former partner envious.

Within the clip, they engage in a dance and exhibit affection on a boat, accompanied by Labrinth's "I Hate the Way That I Love You" playing in the backdrop. However, the teaser did not precisely convey a romantic comedy vibe.

One fan questioned in the comments of the YouTube upload why this watch feels like a teaser trailer for a psychological thriller without disclosing that it is indeed a psychological thriller. A second person added that the music in the trailer doesn't seem to match, but they are still excited to watch it because it looks cute. Another viewer expressed their confusion, stating that the teaser provided no indication of what the movie is actually about.

The full-length trailer was released on Thursday, providing fans with additional insight into the storyline. Bea and Ben had previously been romantically involved but they soon realized that their personalities were not compatible. However, while attending a wedding together, they deceive their friends and family by pretending to be in a romantic relationship. They display affection towards each other, share meals, and even dance together.

The release of Anyone But You has generated a lot of discussion among fans. Earlier this year, viewers speculated about a potential romantic connection between Powell (35) and Sweeney (26) after seeing behind-the-scenes footage of them being affectionate. It is worth noting that Sweeney is engaged to Jonathan Davino, while Powell ended his relationship with girlfriend Gigi Paris in April, coinciding with the completion of the movie's filming.

Powell recently discussed the purported affair in his feature article for Men's Health magazine. Reflecting on the public exposure of the situation, he described feeling disoriented and unjustly treated. However, he acknowledged that such experiences are now an inherent aspect of his profession.

Continuing, he shared an example: "In instances where you engage in meaningful conversations or connect with someone, and suddenly they request a selfie, it can be a moment of realization and surprise..."

Sweeney addressed the rumors candidly in an interview with Variety in August, expressing how she feels worn down by them. She acknowledged the difficulty of observing without being able to defend oneself.
