Director of Disney's Live-Action Sword In The Stone Remake Reveals Unfortunate News

Director of Disney's Live-Action Sword In The Stone Remake Reveals Unfortunate News

Development on the remake began back in 2015, but recent updates from the director bring disappointing news for fans of the classic tale.

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo shared a disappointing update on Disney's live-action remake of The Sword in the Stone. The original animated film from 1963 follows a young King Arthur being trained by the wizard Merlin for his destiny. The live-action remake was announced in 2015, with Fresnadillo joining as director in 2018.

During an interview about his film Damsel, Fresnadillo mentioned that the live-action remake of The Sword in the Stone is currently not in production. He expressed uncertainty about the project's future but expressed interest in bringing his experience from directing his latest fantasy film to the Disney classic.

Years ago, I was involved in a project that was unfortunately put on hold. To be honest, I'm not sure what the future holds for it. I believe it's a wonderful project with a compelling story that deserves to be shared, but only time will tell. Let's stay hopeful and keep our fingers crossed.

It's always uncertain with movies; you never know when they'll come to fruition. I'm really hoping that Disney gives the green light for the movie, but as of now, I'm in the dark about any updates. The knowledge and skills I've gained from my experience with [Damsel] would definitely be valuable for The Sword in the Stone.

Is the Live-Action Remake of Sword In The Stone Still Going to Happen?

Updates on the King Arthur movie have been few and far between ever since Fresnadillo was revealed as the director. Initially, it was announced as a Disney+ original, with Enrique Chediak as the cinematographer and Eugenio Caballero as the production designer. However, since the announcement back in 2018, there has been little to no information regarding the progress of the film - until now, with the recent confirmation that production has been put on hold.

Disney shared news in October 2021 about a live-action spinoff series inspired by T.A. Barron's The Merlin Saga books. However, there have been no further updates since the initial announcement.

Disney is currently working on live-action remakes, some with set release dates like Snow White and Moana, while others like Lilo & Stitch do not have confirmed release dates yet. Due to the high number of animated classics being adapted into live-action films, it is possible that more popular projects were given priority. As a result, although progress on The Sword in the Stone has paused for now, there is still a chance it could be produced in the future.

If Disney were to create The Sword in the Stone in live-action, it would need to be done on a reasonable budget while staying true to the original story. However, recent Disney adaptations like Peter Pan & Wendy received mixed reviews and The Little Mermaid did not perform well at the box office due to high production costs. It remains uncertain what the future holds for The Sword in the Stone, as six years have passed since Fresnadillo was attached to the project.

Editor's P/S:

The news of the stalled production of Disney's live-action remake of "The Sword in the Stone" is disappointing. The original animated film is a beloved classic, and many fans were eagerly anticipating its live-action counterpart. However, the lack of updates over the past four years suggests that the project may be in jeopardy.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the film's future, it is important to remain hopeful. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo expressed enthusiasm for the project and believes it has a compelling story to tell. If Disney eventually gives the green light, Fresnadillo's experience from directing "Damsel" could bring a fresh perspective to the classic tale. With any luck, the live-action "Sword in the Stone" will eventually make its way to the big screen, fulfilling the dreams of fans who have been waiting patiently for its arrival.
