A Dungeons and Dragons fan has recreated the character Doric from the Honor Among Thieves in Baldur's Gate 3. The game has been in PC early access since 2020 and is set to have its official release for Windows and Mac next month. A PS5 port is scheduled for September, followed by an Xbox Series X/S release at a later date. The upcoming 1.0 release of Baldur's Gate 3 has generated excitement among many Dungeons and Dragons fans, leading one fan to create a character based on a recent movie.
Both the Baldur's Gate series and the Honor Among Thieves movie are set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of Dungeons and Dragons. The first game in the series was released by BioWare, Black Isle Studios, and Interplay Entertainment in 1998, followed by Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn in 2000. However, after Dark Alliance 2 in 2004, the series experienced a period of limited activity. It wasn't until the release of the Siege of Dragonspear expansion for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition in 2016 that the Baldur's Gate series continued.
Reddit user tommypicture recently shared their Teifling Druid character from Baldur's Gate 3, which was inspired by Doric from Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Excited for the game's upcoming release, tommypicture immersed themselves in D&D content, including the prequel novel The Druid's Call, which detailed Doric's journey with the Emerald Enclave. Both the movie and book served as inspiration for tommypicture to create their version of Doric in Baldur's Gate 3.
Despite D&D's less than stellar history with movie adaptations, Honor Among Thieves received positive reviews and grossed over $208 million at the box office. This popularity has led to some Baldur's Gate 3 players choosing to base their characters on those from the film.
The developers recently added the ability for players to customize character preset faces in Baldur's Gate 3. However, the level of character customization is not as detailed as some RPGs. Despite this, tommypicture did a commendable job recreating Doric in the game. While they couldn't perfectly replicate actress Sophia Lillis' facial features, they achieved a fairly accurate representation of her appearance in the movie.
The post received a positive response on the Baldur's Gate 3 subreddit, with commenters praising how closely the character resembles Doric. One commenter specifically highlighted the character's expression as a major factor in capturing the likeness to actress Sophia Lillis. Another commenter suggested that tommypicture's character could be seen as an older version of Doric.
Baldur's Gate 3 releases on August 3 for PC, on September 6 for PS5, and is in development for Xbox Series X/S.
